Solid Network Ireland - Community Action

This is the Community Action or Coordination Sub-group for SolidNetwork. At the meeting on November 28th 2022 - Davie Philip, Tom Stewart and Leo Sammallahti agreed to act as the SolidNetwork community action or coordination group for 2023.

The need for the creation of a Community Action (CA) working group was identified and agreed at a meeting on May 10th 2022.

This primary purpose of the working group is for the following purposes -

  1. To have an overview of SolidNetwork's activities and finances, to prepare a budget for 2023 and to support the network and its members in achieving their goals in alignment with the networks charter and governing documents.

  2. The group will act as a clear point of contact for members and be available to respond to members questions in regard to their areas of responsibility.

  3. To these ends, the group will coordinate four quarterly administrative meetings 'Community Action Calls', which are open to all members. In addition, the group will allocate a budget to support the general membership to organize the annual general meeting, and an in-person gathering.

  4. This group is not responsible for tools such as loomio, collective.tools, open collective, website admin, or new membership applications. If members have any questions relating to these areas, they will be referred to the volunteer members currently administrating these platforms.

Community Action is a dedicated working group. This means:

  • The CA is compensated for their time in attending and organising meetings. The rate of compensation has yet to be decided but will be considered as part of the budget proposal for 2023.

  • The working group has autonomy to set its own agenda, to organise, meet and make decisions, as they see fit, provided those activities align with the purpose of the group outlined above.

  • The CA is autonomous, this means that it does not need to inform or seek agreement from SolidNetwork's general membership provided CA activities are within the scope of its purpose as outlined above. Should the CA have proposals or activities they feel are beyond the scope of its purpose then they should put them to the general Loomio forum for members to discuss.

  • Members share responsibility for decision-making and organising the activities of the group.

  • The group is ultimately accountable to the members of SolidNetwork, its activities and membership are subject to review annually at the AGM or at an EGM in exceptional circumstances.

  • Participation in Community Action (CA) is open to all interested members. However, we ask for a minimal time commitment to join meetings, to participate in discussions and to coordinate with other members to help achieve the groups purpose.

  • Any member can join and participate in discussions, whether in this Loomio subgroup or through attending CA meetings. Meeting minutes will be available for members in this subgroup and on our cloud https://solidnetwork.collective.tools.

  • The CA should have a minimum of three active members and should ideally have more. Part of the responsibilities of the CA is promote and encourage members to participate in CA activities. This is not simply for purposes of transparency but because the group will need to recruit new volunteer members to join the CA to help achieve the groups purposes, to sustain its activities and to have a healthy rotation of members.

  • We recognise that our members have different capacities to participate, balancing work and family commitments. We want to facilitate a group that is representative of our members and will work to accommodate this as much as possible.
