UNITE WNC Core Principles and Practices

C Cheri Public Seen by 480

The following emerged from the Summit as our core principles and practices. What do each of these mean? Are we missing anything?
- Quality of Life
- Sustainability
- Collaboration / Cooperation
- Learning
- Partnership
- Shared interest and resources - The Commons

I especially like the use of the word 'everyone' since folks who were born here can feel left out, especially in technology. I have no issue with the phrase 'problem-solving' since the first step to finding a solution is to admit the problem exists.

Suggested addition...

Learning - We rigorously pursue new information and diverse perspectives; we are continually learning and adapting.

I'm with Cat re Collaboration/Cooperation and Partnership, could combine...

Collaboration/Cooperation - We actively reach out to individuals, organizations, and communities to invite participatory problem-solving and partnerships built on trust, integrity, transparency, and a commitment to inclusion.

@lamarowen Just to clarify my suggestion around problem to possibility....

Often the first step is recognizing the problem or issue and a focus on what's desired and possibilities for achieving that is simply a more divergent way of resolving the problems (sometimes discovering a solution where the problem is now irrelevant). Simply a shift from problem to possibility often makes room for greater creativity and innovation, IMHO.

In the last few months, we've continued to 'test' out our core values and see how they sit. For our mission statement we whittled it down to the most important core value around quality of life. There is a new concept I'd like to pass by everyone and I think it fits under the learning value but it also could fit under collaboration - that is the concept of 'open source.' That any code/product that UniteWNC produces should be open source so that others can use it freely and continue to improve it, giving improvements back to the common good for us to benefit from as well. UniteWNC could approach capitalizing on open source products by offering value-added services for a fee - this is the model Enspiral uses. What do folks think? Should we add that concept in? If so - what about this draft of revised core values (I also incorporated some of Steve's earlier suggestions as it seemed others supported those edits as well). I also took a new stab at the quality of life one and changed 'problem-solving' per Cheri's comment:
Quality of Life – We, as WNC natives and transplants, share a common devotion to our home region and the unique quality of life we enjoy. Our mission is to facilitate community-driven and locally-developed tech solutions to sustain and improve this quality of life for everyone across our region.
Sustainability - We are committed to finding and implementing progressive technology solutions that protect, preserve, and enhance our resources.
Collaboration/Cooperation - We actively reach out to individuals, organizations, and communities to invite participatory solutioning and partnerships built on trust, integrity, transparency, and a commitment to inclusion.
Learning - We rigorously pursue new information and diverse perspectives; we continuously learn and adapt. An extension of this value is all solutions developed by us will be open source.
Partnership - Partnerships built on trust, integrity, transparency, and a commitment to inclusion are essential to our organization’s success.
