How people join Hackland

JK Jorån Kikke Public Seen by 38

I'm gunna propose some changes to how people join Hackland

basically to protect our space from being overwhelmed by lots of new people who break everything and go away

Idea 1 - 'casual koha membership' goes away - we have enough normal members to survive and actual membership is really easy to get

Idea 2 - we only give out the door code over slack, so new people must have slack setup and working

Idea 3 - on the 'Join Hackland' form we ask "What are you excited about useing the space for?"

we also state here that joining Hackland for one off, time restricted projects, is not really the vibe of the space

for these there are plenty of commercial spaces you can hire which are setup to heal all the tools

stuff I'm hoping to fix: 3-4 of our long term members have felt that their tools were in danger and have taken them out of the space

this has left the remaining tools in even more danger and left a bad feeling of 'well I should take mine too then, but I don't want to completely destroy Hackland"

thoughts?

Added a bunch of proposals

Slack is a terrible medium but in absence of a better one access to the space should only be available in exchange for bi-directional communication.

i think we should ask people, “what are you contributing to hackland other than just money?”

Hey,
1/ I did not even know we had a 'casual koha membership'.
2/ Pushing people to get on Slack is totally a necessary push :)
3/ An intro to the mindset of the place would really help people settle in - a "valve" like introduction booklet or video, showing what the guidelines mean in practice. That might be even more efficient than a question thrown at new members if they do not have any context.
Happy to help wit that.

Other thoughts :
short time members : Some peeps might be really valuable to have in the space even for a short time.
And about breaking tools/consumables : I think it is a separate discussion, I have heard about separate account to replace broken bits and pieces, and it s a good idea.

Lets sort out upstairs Closed Tue 19 Mar 2019 9:03PM

Hackland belongs to all members. Currently the upstairs area is sub-optimal. There have been a few proposals as to what it should be. But we need some concrete action to make it a reality.

Proposal: Working bee Saturday morning 23rd of March (2 hours or so to do a tip run).

Agree- Working bee 23rd from 10am
Disagree - Nahhhhh

Please add any other decisions or discussion for the final outcome.

I won’t be able to attend (will be back in NZ in mid April) I would suggest to focus this as membership storage as we don’t have storage facilities for all members. Plus one/two work tables for focussed/quiet work. Maybe we can set up the shower a little better so members can actually use it?

Perhaps a garage sale at some time to fundraise / dispose of excess junk/treasures?

Hello team, my first post here. I would suggest perhaps that some extra transparency regarding who is a member could help. Ideally, some way to verify membership might help with security and maybe motivate the curious to join. Requiring bank transfers is a smart choice. Kiwibank business accounts you can create a "read-only" data access user, which might enable mid-level and beginner members to verify people who show up. This might also boost revenue somewhat by turning everyone into sales/accounts/debt collection if you get my drift? For example, if I could check a prospective or new members payments, maybe I could convince them to join or give them a welcome tour / roll out the red carpet for a new member (for example). Everyone has their own levels of comfort about usage, but I like to tread lightly and wanted a few weeks of payments to go through before getting more involved. I just put a linuxbox in which has a big music library on it (need some help getting Samba working better) the idea is the other machines could stream audio across the LAN or make some kind of jukebox server. Soon I will bring some tools, and contribute my collection of nuts and bolts to the current collection. Nothing super valuable. I feel like it would be such a shame if anything bad happened such as anything being stolen, that I will try to do my bit to protect things where possible. Currently it's a bit like getting into a nightclub on the doorlist and I wonder what ways we can self-police all this. :)
