TE AO MĀRAMA

Naumai e ngā hua e hora nei
I haere mai nā koe
I whakatipu ā nuku i whakatipu ā rāngī
Tāwhia, kia rehua, kia tama i te ao mārama
E Rongo whakairihia ake ki runga
Kia tīnā, tīnā hui e taiki e

We welcome the fruits of sustenance gifted to us by Papatūānuku Earth Mother and Rāngī Sun Father that we may attain the potential of all that is ours to receive in this the physical realm of light, life, universal wisdom and knowledge.

Te Ao Mārama in the Māori world depicts the tangible and intangible, the spiritual and earthly realms. At another level it can also be described as the world of insight, experience and enlightenment.

The pou (post) structure normally located as the central point in the wharenui (traditional meeting house) symbolises the intangible, interconnecting space that houses the physical and spiritual realms created between Rāngī (Sun Father) and Papatūānuku (Earth Mother) following their separation from each other by Tāne Tokorāngī (Deity of humanity).

Tim and I propose that Te Ao Mārama is installed in the TEZA hub area linking Te Ao Mārama within a space where facilitated gatherings of people will be welcomed and embraced and encouraged to share, contribute and participate in an array of activities for the duration of TEZA.

Te Ao Mārama will be illuminated in the evenings to reflect new learnings gained and shared. Those entering the space created by Te Ao Mārama will become part of and in synergy with the sacred energy flow created.

Following is a link to a google doc I've created that contains site plans/ sketches and photographs as at 18 Oct.
Te Urutahi and I have been bouncing around ideas for awhile now to create a site that respects tikanga and seeks to be sensitive to tapu and noa areas.
At its centre from which other structures radiate is Te ao marama, the spiritual hub.
We are proposing that Te ao marama will be a tall conical canopy that rises above the other structures and is located above an existing stage area on the creative quarter site. The stage will still be able to be used for any performances!
The steep cone form of Te ao marama relates to AIO, embodied in a light structure by Te Urutahi and Kiwi Henare being located at the end of the Pier. It also has resonance with the steep pitched roofs of some meeting houses, and gateways of resistance (like at Orakei) and the bell tent.
We would like to construct Te ao marama out of bio-plastic. This is a US corn starch product to frame the TEZA sustainabilty kaupapa.
All comments and questions etc are invited on this initial proposal for the site structures

There will also be wharepaku on the site. Also missing from the site structures plan, the little off the grid cabin will work as the TEZA site office.

Heres a link to the New York group 16 beavers latest conversation on a prospect for an urban commons. This talk titled The Logics of Enclosure has lots of links to writings and may be of interest to TEZA artists.
