Working on Governance in OuiShare

M Maud Public Seen by 499

Dear all, last summit great concerns and discussions turned around the question of Governance (how we deal with flow of informations, money, roles attribution, conflict resolution etc.) within OuiShare.

It was decided to create a group to work on that (Collective design & continuous improvement of OuiShare Governance) and many people were deeply interested in it (I think we were around 10 at the first HO!).
We opted for a methodology (QUEST methodology) to organise our work and for auto-regulation of our group, with people committing when they could and wanted to. We also knew that some budget taken from the governance bucket (see the recent post I shared on loomio) would be dedicated to it.

However this fantastic energy soon faltered, and with low participation the work slowed down. Engaging in the Interview step, only 3 committed members are in. Committed but not having enough time and energy to go through it alone.

In the meanwhile OuiShare keeps evolving and new questions arise regarding governance. And I hear a lot “we will have this discussion at the next summit”.
The thing is, we can’t go through all the issues during summit, even if we are extending them. And to handle great conversations and workshops at summit to make interesting moves, it requires a lot of preparation and work that shouldn’t and can't be concentrated in just a few people in the community.

I’m writing this, speaking for the people committed in the process, because,
- I would like to avoid this embarrassing moment at the summit, when we will need to share what we have been up to on this question, and that we may share that we’re not much more advanced in the end than we were 6 months ago.
- I would like to avoid hearing again at the summit the same concerns and tensions that are linked with this issue, without any concrete suggestions or help to work on it.
- I also would like to avoid that the team working on this keep putting time and energy to unfold a methodology and work on an analysis that no one care about and that would fail to bring concrete improvement.

For all this reason I think it’s time we take a step back in our reflection on governance & learning organisation, and discuss, regarding to our initial intention (Make concrete proposition to address tensions raised at the summit and appearing in the community and process to continuously make evolve OuiShare governance), what prevented us to make critical move so far, what are our strength, and what should be our next move so that we don’t waste our time and OuiShare money.

To be effective, we would need as many people as possible, people who think it is worth spending time on this question.

Please react if you’re in. This meeting could happen first week of january at the latest.
If you have also any suggestion on how to run/facilitate this meeting it is very welcome. I was thinking using Agile Retrospective tools such as the SailBoot but don’t have yet any experience on it.

I don't want to distract at all from the people who are on the working group and have all the context, but just wanted to say I am super interested in this topic and looking forward to learning about what you develop. We are currently going through a 'refactor' initiative at Enspiral that involves a lot about how governance works, so hoping at some point we can do some mutual learning exchange :)

Hello Alanna, thank you for your comment and interest; we're going to share our learnings pretty soon about this work we started; hope you'll find it useful; and I would be very interested as well to know how you're coping with these questions at Enspiral!
