April 2018 meet-up

NS Nick S Public Seen by 314

Thread is to discuss/announce the next meeting date/location.

The meeting details now confirmed, note the change of venue:

Monday 23rd or 30th April.
6pm, The Royal Dick Pub, Edinburgh (in the separate meeting room on the right of the entrance).

I aim to bring something modest I can screen @pennytravlou's suggested documentary video "Building Communities of Commons in Greece" about a community mesh WiFi network in Sarantaporo, and/or some of the P2PF introductory videos.

30th of April would be much better for me!

That's fine with me. If anyone here has an issue with meeting on the 30th April, please speak up!

Date and location are fine with me too. Forest Cafe is a social space so it makes more sense to have our meeting there.

Again, any other views or suggestions, please speak up!

Personally I think The Royal Dick might be somewhat more comfortable than the Forest's basement (which when I saw it, was literally an empty concrete room) , assuming we can book the side room. I'm up for trying the Forest, however.

The other question I'm wondering is if we should attempt to screen a video, which would need something to play it on, and electricity (does the basement have that?) If so we need to try and ensure this is possible in the venue of choice, and prepare a video.

And then there's the time of the meeting, which is historically 6pm but could be open to adjustment.

Ok, The Forest Cafe is our first choice! No objections to 6pm. So I'll see if I can reserve their basement for then.

Let's try these decision tools. Here's a few choices, you can add others if you have good ideas. See the thread on Suggested Locations for more details on criteria and the suggested venues.

The historical time has been to meet at 6pm, this is quite arbitrary, but please say if this is awkward.

2 - The Forest Cafe, Tollcross

Marginally in favour of Royal Dick, on the principle of "devil you know," and that the Hacklab is across the courtyard and might be a source of projector/monitor equipment.

Reminder for anyone who hasn't voted, this poll closes at 6... (after which express your preference in writing!)

Anyone have any topic/video suggestions?

@pennytravlou, I couldn't locate a full, English version of the Sarantaporo mesh-wifi doc, do you have one?

NS

Nick S Fri 27 Apr 2018 2:07PM

Actually, I see now how I can get it with subtitles.

Bad news guys, I discover the basement is already booked, I think the Marxists beat us to it! http://blog.theforest.org.uk/calendar But not only that, the staff tell me the cafe is shut all next week...

I shall try the Royal Dick instead...

NS

Nick S Fri 27 Apr 2018 1:56PM

Ok, the Royal Dick Pub will take us - I've booked the front room on the right of the entrance for 6pm, under the name "Nick". I'll update the topic...

Thanks Nick for organising the meet-up for this evening. I am still not sure if I can make it as I have a deadline for tomorrow (yes on May Day!). In any case, the video I mentioned about is the following: Building Communities of Commons in Greece (by Personal Cinema Production). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5Uj-twO-zc

Not such a big turn out this time! Luckily @roryg turned up and saved the day, but we skipped watching the video and just had a beer and a chat instead.

However, we made a quick test and my 2nd hand flatscreen TV delivered by bakfiets seems like it could work well in future, the main problem as always is noise from the bar.
