Propose-a-badge-badge

JS Jon Schull Public Seen by 104

As per discussion in last week's SPC meeting, I am proposing a badge and a process to encourage bottom-up development of new badges.

The Proposed-A-Badge Badge would be awarded to anyone who successfully advocates for the creation of a new badge. In this way the community can be encouraged to articulate and develop it's norms of laudatory behavior.

The process for advocating this new badge could be the same as the process for other Loomio proposals (Like this one): A discussion thread created, a proposal developed, and at least 15 Agree-votes constituting at least 80% of all votes (including Abstain).

If this proposal is approved, the Badge and the process would be put in place, and the bootstrapping of our badge-ocracy will be advanced.

(The system could evolve along lines laid out in the 2016 TEEEM Tools whitepaper from which the below image is taken, but that would be up to the community.)

Proposal passed. I guess I get the first Propose a Badge Badge! Thanks everyone.

@bobrieger do you want to lead us through the review of existing badges?

Based on discussion, I am explicitly proposing that badge recommendations be approved (or rejected) using loomio processes and or usual criteria for passage.

I am in agreement with this PROVIDED in conjunction we undertake a serious effort to perform a triage on existing obsolete, unused, or no longer relevant badges.

Just to clarify, you are saying that the badge must be advocated for and that it must also be created, correct?

When you said, "anyone who successfully advocates for the creation of a new badge", all that's really saying is when someone is good at advocating, correct? (Not that the badge is created.) :nerd:

Yes, it's a nitpicking point – but I saw it before the other nitpickers (who shall remain nameless – but you know who you are! )!

Using this process opens badge creation to the whole community. It also relieves a burden from whoever defines new badges today.
Questions:
Once a badge is approved who creates the actual Badgr badge?
Are the new badges categorized with other like badges?
Who decides what category (if not obvious) and what the badge image will look like? (Harking back to the Saturday night workshop at Enablecon 2018)

Agree with Bob Rieger's comment.

Someone will need to do the graphics for the new badges. Jen Owen has created all badge designs in the past. If there is still budget left in the money we approved for her graphic design work, maybe new badges could be created as part of that.

Hi Jon....I was unable to attend last week's meeting and as a new person, I have no idea what a badge entails.

Can you explain the process and what you mean by "to encourage bottom-up development of new badges". How does a person earn a badge? How do you create a new badge?

I'm sure I will approve but I need to understand what I am approving. Thanks!

Thanks for asking @michellemassie . A plethora of badges are available. Some are required for listing as a maker in EnableWebCentral, some to qualify as a chapter. Most just to encourage and celebrate laudable acheivements.

This is an effort to encourage the community to think about additional badges. (And I agree with @bobrieger that we should also cull unused badges.)

Got it!

Yes @lelandgreen, successful advocacy means getting the badge approved! So I definitely won't deserve, or get, a Propose-a-badge Badge unless this proposal passes!

@jonschull, I love it, but it just hit me -- can we please have a better name for the badge than "proposed a badge"?

How about "Created a Badge", "Badge Creator" or "Badge Maker"???

Or even "e-NABLE Badge Creator", or something?

Everyone? Doesn't that roll off the tongue better than "Proposed a Badge"?
