Knowing from the heart - can we re-frame the value of the heart's benevolent qualities at a political level?

LL Louise Livingstone Public Seen by 55

In yesterday's Zoom session, many words were used like "trust", "compassion", "kindness", "empathy", "deep listening". I have recently completed a PhD through which I explored my own relationship with my heart and learnt to listen to my heart's voice. It seems that the way we were talking yesterday points to all the benevolent qualities and characteristics that the heart possesses, and which I engaged with throughout my PhD.

The key problem that my research discovered is that there seems to be an unconscious understanding/belief in our contemporary world that the wisdom and qualities of the heart - that could so readily show us how to engage more heart-fully with the issues we are discussing here - are merely sentimental; holding no value at the political level where important decisions are made. I show that this idea is merely a perspective that is now preventing us from acting practically from the heart and the heart-space.

My research challenges our taken-for-granted assumption that the heart is a biological pump, and therefore any other ideas we might have about the heart are irrelevant or irrational. My research shows clearly that this is merely a perspective that sadly robs us of the possibility of considering the heart, and the heart's qualities, as able to direct us wisely in these challenging times.

I'd love to talk further with any of you who are interesting in questioning our foundational knowledge about the world. I am interested in exploring other ways of knowing that, it could be argued, could be more beneficial to us as we consider ways of moving into our collective future.

I'd love to know more about your research. When I did a graduate course in social enterprise a few years ago, I was told to read Daniel Goleman's work on Emotional Intelligence to understand how a community-oriented enterprise, or any enterprise for that matter, could operate effectively from within the space of 'heart-wisdom'. I also practised Buddhist meditation for many years, and the most meaningful meditations I ever had were those that centred upon the heart chakra.

Thanks Andrew, I am familiar with Daniel Goleman's work and it is very interesting. From the perspective of my research, I argue that most of the contemporary work that champions the heart within political channels is still situated in an idea of the world that is first and foremost directed by head-based, rational thought. This is the thinking that has led us to where we are today, and if we still consider the wisdom and guidance of the heart from this place, we may be led down false paths. In this sense, religion/mystical philosophy is still seen as 'over there', a nice 'add-on', beyond our usual ways of thinking. I am inviting people to contemplate what would happen if they sank into their hearts first, at the level at which important decisions about the world are made, and then allowed any arising guidance to rise to to the head to be analysed by the discursive intellect. This involves taking the heart seriously at the political level. I'd love to chat further. My website is going live later this week - www.heartsenseresearch.co.uk

I just watched a video interview with guy named DOnald Hoffman (will link below) and during the conversation he mentioned that evolutionary psychology/psychologists were beginning to put forth the hypothesis that logic and reason are actually lower order functions that have been used by humans to persuade each other of things (I am very generally paraphrasing here). I thought this was a fascinating topic and could also play a role in this discussion, which is, bringing to the masses, to the world, new inquiries into the limitations of logic and reason that are being 'backed' by sociological and scientific progress (which always makes people feel better about the validity). https://zdoggmd.com/incident-report-266/

Hi Louise, it was great to hear you speak on the call yesterday. I feel fully aligned with your thinking and would like to collaborate on various things together. I have been working on a strategy for what I call the 'Kindfulness Movement' for the last 4 years and am also collaborating with various others on ways we can bring this to life. Would like to interview you as part of an ongoing content series we're creating. Would you be up for that?

That would be wonderful Mary. I am working with ideas of 'heart sense' (like common sense), and heart-full-ness. I'd love to talk further and collaborate. Would an initial Skype chat be useful?

Launch series of social media challenges that seek to promote acts of kindness Closed Thu 2 Apr 2020 1:03PM

Expanding the definition of kindness and in a way 'rebranding' it so it doesn't feel to fluffy and mashmallowy. Kindness could be considered anything that is life sustaining for self, others, and the planet. With the network of people we all know, we could stage something going viral. If others are interested, I can share what these challenges are. Each challenge, also dovetails into localisation projects with real world impact.
