Software for Remote Working/ Learning/ Socializing

DS Danyl Strype Public Seen by 104

With a huge proportion of the world's population facing weeks of lockdown, as part of the attempts to reduce the spread of COVID-19, a lot of those people are having to figure out on the fly how to work from home, teach/ attend online classes, or socialize with family and friends without leaving the house. This is an opportunity to test the capacity of existing free code software to provide for these needs, as well as the capacity of community-hosting groups that provide non-geeks access to these tools when they require a server. It's also an opportunity to identify gaps that might require new apps or hosting services, new ecosystems for deploying and connecting them, and new revenue models for sustaining it all.

Examples of the software freedom movement responding to community needs during the pandemic:

Hello again :) I can definitely work in that field! However, I tried loading Commonshood.org, but it didn't resolve :(

Hi Steve,

nice to hear that you are interested.
About Commonshood I was wrong - sorry! the right link is: https://www.commonshood.eu/

Please get a look also to this: https://www.projectco3.eu/

About the Covid-19 stuff I am developing an enactive approach (1) to this biosocial virus for a sort of instant book of 50-60 pages. We are four co-authors with various skills but a very articulate competence in the DLTs stuff is very welcome as applied to the activities dealing with the virus responses.
The orientation is to ground its understanding on a practical wisdom approach in which P2P commoning is the main social and economic form that could be of help now and after this shut down period.

We sent a proposal to Palgrave McMillan three weeks ago and we are waiting for them to respond. We also have a second option.

BTW, I did not find the draft in your GitHub page...

Maybe it could be easier to communicate via email directly: [email protected]

Best,

Vincenzo Giorgino

(1) embodied, embedded, expanded and... enactive

Hi @Vincenzo Giorgino! Indeed - oops - I realised after posting that my GitHub repository is private and it should probably stay that way if I'm to publish somewhere. I've sent you an email with my article attached, instead.

Hi Vincenzo, thanks for sharing this, but please don't use the proposal tool just to make a comment. It's confusing for other group members. Also, please try to add your comments to a thread where they're on-topic or start a new one. I have moved your 'comment' to a thread where it's more on-topic.

I just found a blog piece by the FSF about their remote work recommendations. Frankly I don't think all of these are the best tools for non-geek users (eg I'd recommend Element over any IRC client for public chat rooms), but there are some good ones in there. It links to a mailing list and this wiki:
