Hi all!

I'm an urbanist and activist with a background in the ecological cities movement, who works to build the sharing and collaborative movement in Australia and beyond. In 2012, I set up Share Adelaide to curate sharing ideas and news for South Australia.

I've worked in State government in South Australia for over fifteen years, in roles including environmental planning, greening of government, resource efficiency and collaborative economy. During this time, I established the Ecological Footprint concept in the state, which was later incorporated as a target in the Strategic Plan for South Australia; initiated Share N Save, a digital platform to map community sharing activity, which has since been made open source; and successfully advocated for funding for the Adelaide Maker Faire and community based shared fabrication spaces.

In 2017 I initiated AUDAcities, a catalyst for creating locally productive cities in a way that retains more wealth locally and distributes that wealth fairly: www.audacities.co.

Sharon all the best here a while back while in Melb i helped set up a 'sharehood' and share implements etc. possibly an outworking of your idea sharing approach xx ciao paul

Greetings fellow Cosmo-Localisers - i have been researching and publishing and working in this field for 20years and focusing on the Australian Bush Mechanic, Regional Economics and more recently the Planetary Bricoleur. The work on this group and Jose Ramos in particular are relevant to, and overlap with, my fields of praxis. So i look forward to working with and learning from you folks and the experiences on Loomio.

ciao paul Wildman
PS i also publish a blog CRAFT on WordPress that touches on these issues http://www.crafters-connect.com/

Hi all, and thanks Jose for this section/initiative
My background for many years has been in sustainable building (design and construction praxis).
Originally I had started this in Melbourne (some 25 years ago I guess). SInce then I have moved to the country practising a form of sustainable building, but through the CTC have come to realise that what I've been doing has been a form of regenerative cosmo-localisation as my construction work has entailed
1. involvement with farming food growing (building with earth and straw - a waste stream in one area used as a resource in another - building).
2. THis way of building has also entailed manufacturing, specifically having to invent and design new tools, including new skills, to be used in the building practise of sustainable buildings.
So linking these various sectors is an obvious imperative.
Ofcoarse when you're forced to foray into peripheral trades, that your own trade is dependant upon, brings you interest and curiousity in the other trades.
Hence I've developed other interests in areas such as biochar, pyrolysis systems for this (as only one example). I've consequently learnt how to integrate this into my core activity of building, ie: pyrolysing waste product materials from building on site. This adds to energy efficiency in the building process, sequesters carbon so that the building process is heading towards net carbon neautrality, and then applying the biochar to the environs has the benefits of soil enhancement for food growing for the houses that I build.
I'm coming in here with this view of circularity that I'm interested in, in the concept of local manufacturing, or cosmo-localisation.
Here are two simple bits of local manufacturing that we've made for one of our building projects, a pyroliser and a straw clay tumbler for mixing materials for wall building.

Thanks Vasco

I've used one of your pictures as a banner for the working group (shows people working ;) I hope that is okay but if not I can change it. Let me know.

INTRO

I've been in conversation with Michel Bauwens for 10 years since Darren Sharp introduced me to him in about 2007, and in conversation with Darren for almost 17 years from the days of his critical media studies and my strategic foresight studies. Those were the foundation years.

I began formulating CL from my phd thesis days 2006-2010. CL initially emerged as a synthesis of alternative globalisation strategies.

Interest and advocacy for cosmo-localization quickened when I started a local maker space in Melbourne in 2013. People got the concept but activating it seemed hard.

Over the last few years I've started to write blogs about it for the p2p foundation spurred on by support from Michel, Vasilis K., Vasilis N. Stacco and others.

This year I've had the chance to write 2 articles on CL, run an event in Melbourne and do some research with the p2p foundation.

This CL working group comes from an awareness that we each hold different pieces to the puzzle.

This is an effort to bring together various pieces of the puzzle and help us emerge as more coherent, knowledgeable and aware in bringing it forward as a powerful strategy.

I'll be posting articles and knowledge I have of CL / DGML in the coming days.

Thanks all

jose

Hello all, and thanks @sharonede for invitation!

I am currently developing a PhD research at Brunel University in London focusing on localised manufacturing (what we call 'distributed' manufacturing) for collaborative consumption and sharing economy. I am particularly interested in enabling communities to have control over means of production of goods, responsive maintenance and, as a result, reducing environmental impact and improving overall well-being.
I develop this project with partner universities from Brazil, China, South Africa, Mexico, India and Europe and have a pleasure to observe how diverse our planet is in terms of relationships, resources and the ways we deal with context-specific challenges.

Here is the link to the project: http://www.lens-international.org/

Looking forward to fruitful discussions.

You're most welcome, the excellent Cindy Kohtala suggested I send you an invitation :)

Hi,

I am an academic (TUT, Harvard) and activist (P2P Foundation, P2P Lab) interested in the conjunction of digital commons with local manufacturing technologies. The main project I am involved in is "Phygital" (http://www.p2plab.gr/en/archives/1119).

Starting in September 2017, a pilot will take place in the mountainous municipality of Tzoumerka (Greece). Our main goal will be to build appropriate institutions that would scale-up DGML/cosmolocal practices. My colleagues and I will keep you updated on the developments of the pilot.

Looking forward to fruitful discussions too!

dear Aine,

I am very interested in learning more details about your particular project and will start by checking the lens site,

my latest CL contribution is introducing it as a job-creation strategy in the Commons Transition Plan for the city of Ghent last spring

has https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Anna_Seravalli been invited on the list already ?

I maintain resources on CL in the following sections of the p2p wiki:

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Category:Manufacturing (general info)

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Category:Mutual_Coordination (open supply chains aspect)

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Category:Thermodynamic_Efficiencies (ecological aspects)

I strongly recommend reading our latest draft report, The Thermo-Dynamic Efficiences of Peer Production, by Xavier Rizos and Celine Piques, showing a potential 80% decreate in material footprint, with evidence from organic agriculture

Xavier's email, who commites between Sydney and Paris, is in cc, and drafts of the report can be request

my bio:

Michel Bauwens is the founder and director of the P2P Foundation and works in collaboration with a global group of researchers in the exploration of peer production, governance, and property. Bauwens travels extensively giving workshops and lectures on P2P and the Commons as emergent paradigms and the opportunities they present to move towards a post-capitalist world. Michel is also research director of CommonsTransition.org. a platform for policy development aimed toward a society of the Commons and a founding member of the Commons Strategies Group, with Silke Helfrich and David Bollier, who have organised major global conferences on the commons and economics. Three recent books, amongst which (with Vasilis Kostakis), ‘Network Society and Future Scenarios for a Collaborative Economy’ have been published in English, Dutch and French. Michel currently lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand and is currently finalizing a Commons Transition Plan for the city of Ghent in Belgium.
