OuiShare Fest Program Next Steps - Backfeed exp & Program Team

DU Filippova Diana Public Seen by 73

Dear all,

First and foremost, a big THANKS to all those who participated to the OuiShare Backfeed experiment and submitted ideas in spite of technical issues. A big THANKS also to the Backfeed team who has been super reactive to questions and fixed said technical issues in a wink. Backfeed has kindly written a summary and short report on the experiment, when you can also find the average evaluation for each contribution submitted (10 contributions overall). According to the debates, discussions and contributions, the most popular subjects concern the future of work, the commons, cooperatives, the next disruption and reshaping our institutions.

However as those of you who participated surely noticed, the backfeed tool is not that well adapted to content brainstorming, which is why we’ve decided that we will hold another collective brainstorm session asap to shape the program backbone with the Program Curation team, which we intend to create now.

For your information, the following folks actively participated in the program slack discussion or individually expressed their wish to me or Fran to be part of the team (If I forgot someone in this list or if you don’t want to be part of the team anymore, please say so): Tomas (De Lara), Ben Tincq, Justyna, Marguerite, Manuella, Esra, Joachim, David Canat, Maud, Eugenio, Ana and David We.

If you would like be a curator, please carefully read the responsibilities listed below and fill out the doodle for a hangout next week if you are still interested. We will define after the hangout who the 6-8 curators will be.

Creating the Program Curation Team

This year we are creating a program curation team of 6-8 people max which will be a little different from the track leaders in the past, because responsibility for the whole program will be held as a group, instead of each person only being responsible for their track. In short, here is the curation team’s “job description”:

Responsibilities of the team

  • Collectively delivering high quality Fest program content, in close coordination with the program curation chairs and the program coordinator
  • Reviewing and evaluating the call for proposals by mid January 2016 and responding to selected contributors with the support of the program coordinator. FYI, the process will be easier this year, because we will be able to process proposals via trello instead of a huge spreadsheet.
  • Deciding how to allocate the travel and accommodation budget for speakers in accordance with guidelines
  • Although each team member has her own specific area of expertise, the team members will not be assigned a specific track. They will work in a team to share their knowledge and make decisions together, to be able to slowly start the process of decentralizing the program creation.
  • Join all dedicated communication and work tools such as a slack channel, trello board and regular hangouts every two weeks. Being responsive is critical for the process to go smoothly.

Budget

The curation team has an overall budget of 10 000 €, a small part of which we would like to distribute before hand to all team members and the larger part which we will distribute dynamically based on people’s actual contributions (through value accounting).

Program coordination and specific responsibilities

The curation team will need to work with all members of the Fest team, but especially be supported by the program coordinator and program curation chairs:

  • Program coordination: we are delighted to welcome Elena Denaro as our brand new program coordinator! Please, give her a warm welcome :) She will be responsible for coordinating the curation team, as well as the speakers and the call for contributions process. She will also work closely with our future intern to supervise logistics related to the speakers and the other areas.

  • Program Curation Chairs: As some of you already know, I am taking on a new job starting December 7, that I will announce shortly :) My new employer nevertheless welcomes and encourages me to keep most of my current activities. Therefore I will keep responsibility for the Fest program content, namely by creating the overall architecture and helping extensively the curation team to deliver a high quality program. As my co-chair, Simone will be responsible for all the content related to platforms, business and organisations, while I will focus on advising on the other subjects.

Warmest,
D

Hi everyone! Congratulation @filippovadiana and great to see you here @elenadenaro :-) I won't have the time to properly get involved in the program curation team, but I will definitely contribute with various proposals to feed it :-)

The Backfeed experiment looks really interesting... thanks for sharing the report.

We have actually used Cobudget (which OuiShare is also using now) in a sort of hacked way to do something similar (prioritising our annual strategy points). We put all the suggested strategic focus items in as 'buckets' and gave people fake 'money' which represented 'priority points'. That way people could weight what they thought was most important. It's like an online version of borda-count voting or dot-voting.

It's not as clever as Backfeed's system, but it got the job done, and perhaps a tool that is simpler and OuiShare is already using for another purpose would mean higher engagement? I'm attaching a screen shot of how it looked if you're curious (this was Cobudget Alpha which looks different from current Cobudget Beta)

I remember talking about this option with Derek this summer @alanna ! To be honest, based on our past experiences I think we are going to be doing less and less collective prioritizing on a network-wide level (no matter which tool we could use), so I am not sure that will be the best application for us. However we are thinking about how to start using cobudget for distributing our investment budget after our next summit in February, which Backfeed definitely cannot be used for at this stage anyways.

Hi there,

I can't participate to the program of the fest from Montreal, but I am trying to find funds to bring several quebecers teammates to the fest.

Also, we are Moving on with Guillaume Lavoie, whom we proposed to be a speacker at the fest. Guillqume is a rising politician in Montrea,, city concelor and very involved in the development of the collaborative economy here, a great support for us.
We met him with Antonin in September.

We are working with him on 2 different formats :
- a talk about the need to involve politician and public powers in the debates
- a workshop to identify concrete and short term action that a city could set up for the emergence of a collaborative economy (for him to experiment in Montreal).

@alexmtl please coordinate with us (fest program team) by mail before designing anything related to OSFest and inviting speakers :) as the program is very tight

thanks for your input Alex! That sounds interesting, but as Simone says, it's critical you coordinate with the program team including @elenadenaro if you want to invite someone. Best to coordinate with them on slack >> ouishare-fest !
