Back to Basics Workshop

CW Christopher Whalen Public Seen by 9

It has been suggested (I think the idea came from Léna) that Sol Samba organize a Back to Basics Workshop to improve the standard of drumming in the band and help newer members catch up.

I (Christopher Whalen) was commissioned by the committee at our last meeting on 27 March 2014 to test out this new collective decision-making tool to see if it makes it any easier to herd the kittens that are members of Sol Samba and to reach a decision about whether or not to run a Back to Basics Workshop.

The first question to resolve is:

a) Do we want to have a Back to Basics Workshop?

Other questions to consider are:

b) Who is going to organize it?
c) When should it be held e.g. 10:30-17:00 on a Sunday or for the first half of a normal Wednesday night rehearsal?
d) Who is going to lead the workshop: current leaders (Rob, Katherine, Chris H, Chris W) or Phil?
e) What should the workshop cover: trying new instruments; going over nagging problems; learning new techniques and grooves; performance skills?
f) Who will actually attend?

Let's tackle question a) first:

Do we want to have a Back to Basics Workshop?

Fire away!

Yes, we should have a Back to Basics Workshop Closed Sat 12 Apr 2014 12:08AM

So we've established that we are going to have a Back to Basics Workshop because there is a demand for it.

The next thing to decide is: b) Who is going to organize it?

Do you agree in principle that it's a good idea have a Back to Basics Workshop?

We can sort out the details of when, where and by whom later.

Yes, definitely. The quality of musicianship in the band needs to be better. This will help newer members of the band catch up and feel more confident playing at gigs.

Yes please. I think we could all do with a reminder of what we should be doing.

Yes I think it's a good idea, though I think it needs to be carefully structured. I'd suggest sections focussing on each instrument with the majority of people on that instrument and a minimal rest of the band to fill in the rhythm. That way different people could lead sections they are specialists on, and most people get the chance to have a go at everything if they want. I know that wasn't the initial question but it allows it to go on the options list for when it is!

I say yes to the workshop and I could do either a Wednesday, or probably a weekend (if we get to the "when" question).

Structure depends on who is willing to lead it -- I'm inclined to ask Phil back, because he will put us on the straight and narrow (especially the caixa section). This would also be a chance for the usual leaders to brush up on what they should be doing.

I say yes to the workshop. Would be most useful on a Sunday so proper time to get through everything. If on a Wed, think we'd need to do all workshop to cover all time a full rehearsal normally takes. If just done over half a workshop, then won't get very far! (Sorry - just adding in extra thoughts there too!)

Regarding this 'decision making tool', I haven't looked into how it's meant to work, but already find it confusing and there are only 3 people who've commented so far! It seems some are comments and some are 'agreed' notifications...is there somewhere else to agree then, or does it somehow translate comments to work it out?

Ah ok...have just seen below! I see you're meant to 'state your position' by clicking as well as any comments if you want to add them separately. Why aren't the click icons at the top? People will miss this if it's not explained... I see Chris H hasn't technically agreed in the expected way either - although his comments clearly show he does agree! Not liking this already!!

Yes please. I second Lena with playing slowly (errors more obvious) before playing faster and noticing how your own part fits with others e.g. Get experienced surdo player to randomly speed up/ slow down and see how quickly the rest of the group fits with them (without the director having to signal from the front).
I represent the late adopters of tech developments and I am proud to report that a) I got onto the site b) I have managed to make a comment. Think this moo moo discussion jobby could be useful (Chris I did it!)

This tool is cool!
I agree with a Back to Basics workshop - my preference would be Weds as I just don't think I would be able to commit weekends. However, I do hear the other arguments that we will have more time to get through things on a Sunday. I guess we should go with consensus

If you haven't already stated your position on my proposal (here's lookin' at you, @chrishumphries, @stephhunter, @philpritchett, @pierreyvesbaccou) in the right-hand column, please do so now. It's closing tomorrow, so now's your chance to influence the decision.

Please have a think about if you'd like to organize the workshop. That's going to be the next proposal - assuming there's not a mass uprising against the idea of a Back to Basics Workshop. Bagsy not me because I'm organizing May Morning and set up the last two workshops with Sam.
