We've had a couple of people offer to do the Chinese translation recently. This thread is for them to connect and collaborate :)

Use zh-Hant for traditional Chinese in language menu Closed Fri 28 Mar 2014

Usually we use zh-Hant (taditional Chinese) and zh-Hans (simplified Chinese) as zh-Hant is used in tw, hk, and sg, unless the regions have very differently vocabulary.

I'd say we just use zh-Hant for loomio.

you're the expert.

do you want it in roman characters or in chinese characters? you'll notice we have a trend of representing languages in their native language and script

The reality is Chinese People use "Taditional Chinese" (正體中文) as written language in formal who lives in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore.

在台灣、香港、新加坡的華人,實際上使用正體中文(Taditional Chinese)作為正式的書面語。

I'm in the ROC. I can assign my minions chinese translation for homework. Where do we start?

Hi all, the zh-Hant translation is nearly completed after a call to action in the g0v.tw community while the #CongressOccupied event in Taiwan continues.

Please help reviewing the translations.

Meanwhile I noticed the language menu now has Chinese (Taiwan). Usually we have Chinese (Traditional) and "正體中文" - unless we are expecting totally different UI strings for people from HK. What do people think?

Do we currently have browser language detection? or is it zh-Hant is not enabled for client header matching?

MI

mix irving Tue 25 Mar 2014

the current system does detect incoming preferred locales, but doesn't take into account dialects (e.g. zh-tw and zh-hk would both be simplified to zh).

we have code underway to address this. so far there has not been a problem but there have not been conflictig/ competing locales

Apologies for the inaccurate language selector, I was aware that it would need changing, but wanted to prioritise activating the language as an option so that you and your community could use the tool. :)

Hi @clkao can I ask a question? zh-Hant is 正體中文, but that's different again from Taiwanese, right? Should we refer to it as Taiwan Chinese or what is the right term to use in English?

I'm deploying this change now, please let me know if it needs any further change

cool that you used loomio to decide this and clarified what can be a bit confusing for us non-Chinese speakers :)

Hi @tomjpsun, @hsinlincheng, @anthonyliu, @clkao. Sorry for being off-topic. I understand the situation may be quite fluid over there. We're interested in scaling the app to prepare for g0v.

Could one of you email me and Ben: simon@loomio.org, ben@loomio.org with a timeframe on when this might happen? Thanks.

Also, is there a instant messaging service you use that we can hook into to keep in touch more fluidly?

@benjaminknightloom, @mixirving

we don't have an irc channel. we use hipchat an loomio internally. We're happy to chat (text or voice/video) on other services as well though

Just to explain the Chinese language situation: there is an overlapping difference between spoken and written language. PRC and ROC both use mandarin, but PRC writes it with zh-Hans and ROC writes it with zh-Hant. Hong-Kong speaks mostly cantonese, but uses mandarin as their writing language (usually pronounced with the cantonese value of the characters) written with zh-Hant. Singapore is just like ROC mostly mandarin, but also written in zh-Hant. Otoh, there are a lot of other dialects in PRC that use zh-Hans as their written form.

JK(

Joop Kiefte (LaPingvino) Wed 2 Apr 2014

I think you can use zh internally as the identifier until someone makes a Simplified translation ;).

Thanks for that, its good to have an overview

@clkao we're using IRC now to try and be more transparent and accessible. feel free to join us and ask questions: #loomio
