Hi Stephen, seeing as you are looking to use SilverStripe CMS as the base framework have you looked into our new online learning library?

http://silverstripe.org/learn/lessons/

Could be a good introduction to working with SilverStripe for people wanting to start contributing to the project. Would suggest also getting an initial SilverStripe install via Composer up on your GitHub repo as a start point for developers. Let me know if you need help in the best practices for setting up projects.
