Ethics, Value Proposition and Communications

Broader questions of a philosophical nature relating to cultural commons in a marketplace for cultural products and services might be discussed here: For example; 'Brand Competition', 'Capitalisation Strategies in Commoning', Creating Surplus, Commons Collecting and Re-distribution etc.

Below is a thread which sprang up in the Meetup. It seemed only fair to reserve that thread for people who come to the Meetup and so I have opened this new thread for it - full text of discussion follows:

Hi Liam @liammurphy this is something that would also fit well into Commons Transition UK...

HI Simon - I'm glad you think so. It's pretty hard to imagine 'commoning' at any level in reality without the use of Peer Production Licensing and contracts.. I just wonder if embedding it in CT'UK' might be a bit much all at once - it's a big area on its own.. thoughts welcome... you may well be right of course - shall consider. Liam

Thanks -- I'd like personally to take care not to do brand competition. "Embedding" for me sounds disharmonic notes. My ambition for CTUK is exactly NOT to be itself another organisation, but to be a place where we can discuss providing the information to help people slot in to existing organisations. Open meetups like P2P Scotland is organising seem to me to be a good idea generally.

Hi Simon: Could you elaborate? Why is the word 'embedding' disharmonic and what care is needed to avoid 'brand' competition? Broadly speaking, artists are people, not brands, although they often create separate identities to trade under which could be called 'brands' I suppose...? This is not primarily a project for 'discussion', but a project to create a vehicle for cultural commoning. It's an action plan and a document of a process. Of course discussion is welcome and I have created a thread for this conversation: See Value Proposition, Ethics etc. I will migrate this discussion there and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Liam

Thanks for moving this, @liammurphy

On further reflection, I think that what I see here is a need for you and I to talk through what we mean, as there is the risk of talking at cross-purposes. Once we have really heard and understood each other (whether we end up agreeing or not) we would be in a better position to carry on a conversation here that could be of interest to others. Thanks!
