What resources do we need to open this Loomio group up to all?

Since we have called this group a "General Assembly", I'd like follow the GA process and guidelines as much as possible. The first, and arguably the most important guideline, is that GAs are open to any and all participants who are willing to respect the process (listen to others, make constructive comments, seek consensus not conquest etc).

At the same time we don't want to lionize the resources of our filoi at Loom.io, by inviting more people than their server or their software can handle. What do we need to increase the number of participants this group can accomodate?

Increase capacity from a user support and server performance perspective I think. As Rich suggested in an email, we could reassess after we hit 100 users?

For some context, the Enspiral group has just crossed 100 members and it's starting to feel like we are hitting a natural limit. The Diaspora crew are having the same experience. They've extended that natural limit a bit by doing a good job of sub-grouping, but we're going to have to sort out quite a few features before it gets comfortable IMO.

Just a question, are you talking about a natural limit from a "group size using the tool" perspective?

Yeah, the number of proposals gets beyond one's ability to participate thoughtfully. This is improved by using sub-groups, and opting out of topics that are not interesting to you. We have some blue-sky plans for features that will help in this department but we're committed to getting the tool working really well for groups of <100 before we go designing the really exciting stuff :)

You do understand my squirming about calling a group "General Assembly" then making it by invitation only?

I understand the squirm Strypey but with the software as it is, it's a pragmatic constraint. It's like having a general assembly in a room with only 100 seats. You can squeeze a few extras in on the floor, but if 1000 people turn up you're going to need a different venue.

Could it be as simple as changing the name of the group to General Assembly: Online Deliberation Working Group or something like that, i.e., instead of saying 'we are the general assembly', say, 'we're testing a platform for hosting a general assembly online'?

@Rich
Sure bro, that makes sense. If we make it clear that we are running a trial, that resolves the squirm. If we ask people by email if they are keen to participate instead of just inviting them from the tool, as you suggested by email, that will help too.

Invite Occupy supporters to this trial group by email Closed Fri 23 Nov 2012 6:34AM

To build this group, we email anyone we know who has supported Occupy Aotearoa, explain that we are running a trial online General Assembly, and ask them if they're interested in actively participating.

I think Rich hit the nail on the head with his suggestions, and this proposal sums up what he is suggesting.
