Carpark Takeover
We are using too much of the carpark and other landlords have complained
How should we manage the carpark use so it's clearer where people can park and when?

Improve situation with van building Closed Fri 30 Nov 2018 6:03AM
Hackland had mostly local members, now we get A LOT of requests for transient people to join us to build their vans. While they are cool projects, this is taking a toll on Hackland: We had neighbours complain about parking, we had overfilled bins, broken tools and overall a pretty constant noise levels. The average use pattern shifted from a few hours a week/member to all week work marathons. How do we want to fix this? This is a multiple choice poll where you can also add options yourself.

I think that both are totally reasonable. Individuals should be paying membership as it is and we really only have enough space for two vehicles at a time by the garage door. In addition to this maybe high use members should pay more than the standard ($15/week) membership fee, especially if they are only here for a month or two. I think a sign up fee, premium membership or a minimum term length would help with this (with perhaps exceptions like community projects).

Only two vans at a time is the max due to our max parking space in front of the roller door(am I right?). Also, it is one membership per person usually, so it seems fair.

weekly trial membership / ad-hoc koha space use: anything except vanbuilding
monthly regular membership: anything
This way we still let locals try the space out for a week and let groups ad-hoc use the space if they want to

I think a lot of issues come from communication issues. It's easy to join hackland (which I think is good and I would prefer to maintain) but it's not necessarily easy to understand hackland. If you live in AKL, members usually take it slow, they check out the space, hang around a few times etc. This is not so easy if your main reason to join is to build a van as quick as possible. We should make sure that we run through somewhat of a checklist when we induct people, maybe even a video?

Hey Jan, the vanbuilding hike might just be temporary and could taper out around Christmas/January but I think we should make sure that we decide collectively how we engage with transient members (specifically that join specifically for tool usage and less for the community) as I would guess we'll be in the same situation next year Oct/Nov again. I think at the current stage limiting to 2 spots will have the biggest effect on those members really (which just might be fair and really reflects the available space without getting into neighbour trouble). Paying per person should really be common sense IMO. If we communicate better that this is a community effort that stands and falls with its members and doesn't survive of some magical council-honeypot, I would hope that van building members would donate what they think this is worth rather than paying what they perceive the "ticket price" is. (BTW I accidentally created the poll inside the car park thread. Was meant to be standalone... )

The proposed responses indicate that we have a problem beyond overcrowding parking space. While I am not aware of, I would guess this is about the social transformation from a relatively stable, interconnected group to a more transient social dynamics.
We need visitors, but we also need a core of people maintaining the space in the long run and can only support a certain fraction of transient members. But I have not seen us reaching this invisible threshold.
Except for limiting the number of vans being worked on, all other options have plenty of side effects and need a bit more discussion to clarify our aims before we decide measures to achieve them.
