Membership Fees

BP Brian Prangle Public Seen by 40

Until we have agreed the membership fees by resolution at our first meeting membership will have to be free. It's important to sign up with greg marler as you won't be able to vote at that first meeting if you haven't been a member for at least 30 calendar days prior to the date of the meeting.

Membership fees will have to be decided by resolution at that first meeting and we will have to give everyone notice of the resolution, so it's necessary to start the discussion now

First Draft Resolution:

Membership fees will be:

  1. Members £5 per annum
  2. Associate members: 2.1 SMEs (annual turnover< £5m) and public bodies £50 per annum 2.2 Corporate for-profit organisations (annual turnover>£5m) £500 per annum

@pauloldham Yes, that's right. Liability for debts in the event that the company folds is limited to £1. As is currently written associate members (corporate members) do not get voting rights. In time this could be changed if there was appetite for it.

Well as the costing model currently stand I appear to get a raw deal in return for my micro-company coughing up £50pa rather than just £5pa. I'm not sure what the incentive is for us, or indeed any SME, to get involved on that basis.

Guess we should have a list of SME & corporate members on the website, like the main OSM foundation does. So the incentive (aside from the warm fuzzy feeling of your company supporting OSM UK) is that you'll be seen to be giving your support. Kudos and a kind of advertising for SMEs & corporates.

And / or you and all your employees might sign up as individual members who would then be able to vote.

I'd like to see a joint membership deal with the OSMF. Ideally this would work so that we're persuading people to "join" just once in one convenient transaction, but that's probably a bit complicated to arrange. ... something for later maybe.

Yes, we could explore other benefits for corporate members (just as the OSMF do).

@harrywood Interesting idea. Definitely one for later but out of interest are there any other local groups doing this.

Other local groups doing this? So far no.
I feel like some of the existing local groups are actually hampering the foundation, by overshadowing and confusing the situation. I'd like to see OSM UK setting an example by very clearly and pro-actively supporting the OSMF. A membership tie-in would be one way.

I agree with Harry. I would like one simple annual payment, preferably a Direct Debit or continuous authority, to pay both Company and Foundation membership in one go. We need to be very clear about which assets, activities and funds belong to each. I see room for a lot of confusion here, I am confused already! If there are separate 'benefits' from both they need to be spelt out. I am in the Foundation both because I want to support OSM and because I attend SOTM almost every year.

OSMF runs the global project, is the custodian of the data and the core OSM servers. This new company will focus on the UK, currently owns no assets and will not get involved in the running of global core OSM services. The 'benefit' of the new company is that we can invest back in to the UK - something which OSMF cannot do as it represents the global project not just the UK side. Basically this sets us free to start doing UK only things (that require a legal structure).

Thanks, that is helpful. I can understand the objectives better now.
