With Cambridge Analytica in the limelight, I think we need to respond to it via articles, posters, videos etc It would be good to continue this responding to public mood or even initiating campaigns to bring awareness to the issues of privacy, freedom etc

We must have a better presence on mass media. Can we do a large scale advertising campaign on Newspapers and Channels ? We must target magazines too. These ads/articles/other content must come under general section; never under technology section.

I think the cost benefit ratio would be too less. Even when people who understand this issue is reluctant to move from facebook, I doubt the effectiveness of a mass media campaign. But there is no harm in trying if you feel it is worthwhile.

tl;dr; In summary, Diaspora needs a target audience and better branding.

Hi,
It seems to me like any social media or app is like an epidemic. There are places were we can induce it and spread it naturally. Like Facebook did, colleges. If we can see the market in groups of users, we see college goers, parents, businesses, activists, media etc. College goers or kids seem to be the easiest for obvious reasons. Since we have an advantage of knowing what the target audience wants like sharing assignments, temp projects/activity groups and photos, we can design the media to suit the purposes.
Also, branding of this product needs to be done for attracting new users, like "People's own media", "The way it's supposed to be". Something that does not seem as needy as Hike.
I don't know on what basis can public and private offices can be made an offer to use Diaspora, but that'll leave a mark.
Also, It'll be great if the user can integrate FB user data(the download user data thing) into the diaspora when starting up.

The problem with that approach is, they might come to diaspora, but will easily go back to another one when that is the craze. But if we succeed in convincing, even a small number of people about importance of privacy, that will be a sustainable change. So I prefer slow growth where people appreciate the real benefits rather than convinced by marketing efforts.

never ask anybody to close facebook acc. it will fireback.
The problem is that people's life is based on facebook. we cannot ask them to change and its not our job to create a life outside facebook so that they can migrate.
our job is to publicize politics of the this issue.
but sad thing is that we dont have a platform for it. not even a mailing group which accept such information without OT scolding.
So our first priority is building our community which cares about "politics of technology".

I seem to have taken a wrong perspective earlier, it seem to be more clear now. The aim to make the works and effect of the large internet companies clear and to give the people a choice. So the content created would be educational.

Educate about the problems, better options for them and encourage them to join and take action.

Well, we can't always say only what people like to hear. I don't expect most people to delete Facebook immediately after we ask. If freedom and privacy requires deleting Facebook, we should definitely ask for it. This issue requires action from people and we should not shy away from asking them to take this action just because they may not like it. Without a call to action, and in this case we can do it at grass root level, we have the replacement technology and platform, only social acceptance is required, it will appear like career politicians giving hollow speeches. As for community, we can use this loomio group, mailing list is just a tool.

That could be useful, but we need materials of all sizes, from stickers to, banners to posters, to short articles to longer articles.
