CMA Strategy July 2020

C Claire Public Seen by 28

We've had a little quiet time after the amazing Action Day. Now let's get back on the runway and get some plane tickets out of Greece! 🚀

Here are the results/discussion points from our last CMA meeting. Please add any more thoughts/volunteer for actions.🙋🙇

We will have a meeting Wednesday 29th July to support each other in our next steps.👪

Again a bit of input from Seebrücke:
They basically ask each city
- to pledge a number of people publicly, e.g. a decision from the city council.
- actively advocate for the reception, e.g. be part of their safe harbour network, take in refugees from a boat, talk to the ministry of Interior, ...

As brought up in the last coordination meeting the From Sea 2 city network could be one network we ask cities to take actively part in.

Relating to this, I think we also should iscuss chapter drop out/ drop off. Seems to be a relatively high rate? 1. Why do we think this is happening, and therefore how could we prevent it from happening? Are we asking too much of our city chapters? Is there anything that we as a could be doing to support. 2. When chapters do drop off, what can we do? Could we establish a strategy for helping to get them back up and running?

Edit on 08/07/20 - Feedback & ideas from UK meeting in which we discussed this:

  • Action days help to keep chapters focused & motivated by having a goal to work towards.

  • Encouraging CC FPs to delegate assigned roles within chapters to share the load of work and give individuals ownership over tasks to keep them involved and interested.

  • Have chapter-wide to do list/ spreadsheet of meeting action points which volunteers within chapter can assign themselves to. Again helps with taking ownership, autonomy, spreading workload etc.

  • City chapters to hold regular meetings within their teams, similarly to keep individuals active and interested.

  • Have people within chapters 'buddy up' - two to a task. To support one another and also remain accountable.

  • Inter-chapter support. In UK we are going to start 'buddying up' chapters on a rolling basis to support each other. Perhaps an option for EMA-wide chapters, too.

I think here the Aegean Grassroots Report, when finished, could serve as a tool to provide chapters with knowledge on the crisis here and a clear idea of what they are taking action for.

Also the insights of academics on the municipal startegy regarding migration could help to clarify why taking action at local level matters.

ooo YES!! Perfecto. Yeh, I guess timeline is the wrong word...more like "steps." Perhaps you/other Motivated Germans (!) could put it into a simple English doc that others could add to/edit. Let's see who else would enjoy doing this...

We have a strategy paper from Seebrücke, it does not really include a timeline but necessary steps (more or less the same as indicated by you) and a paper with claims that are expected from cities if they explain theirselves as "Safe Haven". This could help :) So I am willing to help!

Suggestions/Action Points from previous meeting:

Chapters start with very clear direction (make a petition). Then what?!

We need to make a Chapter Strategy document which includes:

-         a clear definition of a Chapter (their purpose/what they are part of)

-         their timeline (petition – engagement with local NGOs – engagement with political leaders – national support and action)

-         task list with e.g. 10 suggested actions

This will make sure Chapters aren’t isolated, can keep momentum, and know what their next steps are after the initial set-up.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED to make this doc!
