#thankyou and #donate

C Camil Public Seen by 132

I would like to propose changing the UI of diaspora's stream page in the following way:

On the left side of the page, where one can see "Invite friends", "Need help", "Connect services" etc., I suggest adding the section "Donate" which would allow users to donate to diasporafoundation, also adding the #thankyou hashtag like "Do you wanna...say #thankyou?" apart from the #feature, #bug, #NewHere, and #question hashtags.

Why do I propose this? For various reasons. Firstly, people like to appreciate and be appreciated, and we can make it easy for them to express their gratitude by introducing the #thankyou hashtag. I think it would make the community more interactive in all sorts of ways. Secondly, the core developers (and other developers) would be more motivated if they were offered some financial support. Therefore I think it is vital that we introduce the donation section as suggested (or if you come up with better ideas, anything goes!). We need to show respect to programmers and that's one way to do it. It's not all about the money, but it might work out as a motivation, and I hope you do understand my concern.

AFAIK, the foundation doesn't have a real legal structure meaning it can't get money.

Thank you, @augier . I just wanna ping @dennisschubert (sorry for bugging you, Dennis) because I read a comment of his in this thread and I'm not sure if I understood rightly.
An alternative is to place a link to the paypal or whatever accounts of the core (and not only) developers of diaspora*, so that people can choose whom to donate the money to. Just my 2 cents.

Didn't there used to be a link in the menu to donate to the podmin too?

I think there still is, if the podmin activates it.

The core team are attempting to set up a structure which will allow for donations to the foundation, and when the legal aspects have been worked out, doubtless there will be a donate button available.

Of course, each podmin chooses what appears in the interface of their own pod (for example, many pods display the side-bar referred to on the right-hand side of the page, not the left-hand side)

There's not so much of an interest in this topic and at the moment I don't feel like being really motivated to promote diaspora* any longer. Hopefully other enthusiastic people will get involved and change diaspora* for better. Unfortunately things move slowly and openness to change is hard to be achieved under such circumstances.

On the left-hand side of the diaspora* client main page, where one can see “Invite friends”, “Need help”, “Connect services” etc., I suggest inserting the #thankyou hashtag in this way:

“Do you wanna…say #thankyou?”

in addition to the #feature, #bug, #NewHere, and #question hashtags. That will make promotion (one thing that I did for the diaspora* community during the past weeks) easier, and diasporians could say thank you to developers or to other divine instances ;)

Agree - Yes, it would make promotion easier
Disagree - No, it won't make promotion easier
Block - Useless feature
Abstain - I don't really care about this

There's no need to add a link in the sidebar to this tag (and no use in doing so). You can just add it to posts in the normal way if you want to use it.

I think Camil has a point here. We should encourage, stimulate somehow donation toward Diaspora*; Maybe it's possible to set some sort of recurring donations, like a sort of a subscription: If that would be sustainable, and diaspora* would have at least a developer full-time, it would speed up things a great deal - for one, my pull-requests will get accepted faster/reviewed more carefully.

@goob - how are things going on the legal side? Can you share a status with us?
