Remembering/Adjusting our Communication Guidelines within ELF

S Sun Public Seen by 138

A couple of members have recently breached our communication guidelines. This thread aims to remind us of the guidelines we have agreed to as well as offer an opportunity to review and amend them if we see fit.

Relevant items within the constitution are under section 3.2.1 Members Commit to Mutual Respect and Community Harmony, in particular;
3.2.2.4. Members have a right to always be treated respectfully.
3.2.4. Nonviolent communication and dispute resolution.
3.2.4.1. Members commit to not use words or actions of force or violence to resolve disputes.
3.2.4.3. Cultivate language and communication that is non judgemental.
3.2.4.4. Evaluations of effectiveness are done with gentleness and respect without judgement of others or assuming their motivations.
3.2.4.9. No coercion, bullying, belittling or power games are acceptable

3.2.5. This constitution is based on modern scientific enlightenment thinking and some people may object to one or more of these ethics of social engagement. Such people are always free to disagree and choose not be Members

3.3.9.3. promote understanding, tolerance and friendship among all
members and the community

Are we all going to realign with these, or amend them?

Does everyone know what non-violent communication is?

Thankyou for starting this thread @sun7. I think it's important to reflect and always be in motion, always be looking to improvement in the way we interact with each other. I really appreciate this reminder and I was hoping to receive it.

Personally I feel as though everything that has unfolded has been perfect. People 'out there', those who will come later and pour over this trove of information we are collecting as they try to understand and learn from what happens in our community- whether it fails or succeeds - will take a lot from seeing us so open and honest about our struggles in this process.

People need to see the dysfunction here in order to know that they can overcome their own dysfunction. They need to know they are not alone and that this is normal and expected and that there are solutions to all problems.

Here is feels to me that I have strayed off 3.2.4.1 in particular, and perhaps 3.2.4.3 as well. I think we have all actually done pretty well with 3.2.2.4 and 3.2.4 more broadly.

3.3.9.3 is a good one. It's what I was hoping to push through to in the equity thread. I felt as though I needed to use strong words to be heard, as scarcity-based perspectives can be difficult ones to punch through. I'm sorry for any undue offense or stress I have caused, to @deancameron and @moniquekurdian in particular.

Thanks for this thread. I broke the communication rules by using strong language and frustrated accusations based on an incorrect expectation. That incorrect expectation is that part of living at ELF involves regular physical contribution to progress the project. The principle of regular physical contribution is not written into the Constitution therefore no one is bound to it. Once again, please accept my apologies for my miscommunication based on an erroneous belief. I am embarrassed at my lack of professionalism and I am especially sorry to embarrass Dean with my outburst. I am also sorry to use the F word in front of Alex.

I am putting other things before ELF for now but I will try to keep up with everything via Slack.

I don’t care about the use of the word fucking or any o the fuck derivatives. My issue is with disrespecting other member without coming to understand where everyone is coming from and judging people without living in thier shoes.

Thanks for bringing this up sun. That is how it should be done!
