Proposal to shift bug/issue tracking work to GitHub Issues for QGIS 3x+

TS Tim Sutton Public Seen by 368

Dear QGIS Voting members

The bug tracker issue tracker for QGIS has been under much discussion over the last year (or more). This topic has again been under renewed discussion these last weeks and we need your help to move forward. If you want some back history, it would be good if you read this thread from the QGIS Developer mailing list:

Mailing list discussion

In this context we would like to use this thread to make a decision and move forward in time for the QGIS 3.0 release.I will raise a motion for you to vote on attached to this thread. If we are not able to find a clear resolution we will present alternative options as a follow up vote, prompted by your discussion below.

@nyalldawson So your preference would be for a motion which says "Let us make the hub.qgis.org site read only and from now on use GitHub issues for issue tracking"?

ND

Nyall Dawson Mon 29 Jan 2018 8:34PM

I'd say block new issues. Leave it editable for existing issues so that we can still close/comment/ask for feedback on them?

Indeed might be a better move. It migh avoid confusion, and we will have the benefit of having all new features on github.

Ok since only Nyall has voted, let me withdraw the motion in favour of a 'one system' option.

I agree to migrate to GitHub issues and deprecate the current Redmine tracker Closed Mon 5 Feb 2018 5:02PM

If you agree to this proposal, vote yes.

If you vote "yes" here, we will disable the creation of new issues on the Redmine system, redirecting users instead to the GitHub issue tracker. We will keep existing issues on Redmine editable until they are closed.

If you wish to hold out for an alternative option (e.g stay on Redmine which we currently use, or move to GitLab or some other platform), vote "no". In the case of a "no" vote we will raise a new motion until we find quorum.

Please read the parent thread comments before making your vote

My opinion is that I feel uncomfortable for the following reasons:
- QGIS project is making a lot of last minutes moves these times.
- I really would take time to move to a self hosted FOSS platform like GITLAB.

Multiple reasons : no clear consensus neither convergence in the community. A vote now seems prematurate. My opinion depends on the conditions of a migration ( keeping history?, multiple instances?) . And -1 for GH and +1 for Opensource GitLab.

I’m with Nathan on this one. We need a better way of reporting and github is as good as it gets (for now). There will be some initial pain to overcome but better in the long run👍🏻

My NO it's not a NO on moving away to redmine in general but I prefer to discuss this topic in Madeira and have a better understanding of the alternatives (like gitlab).

While I am not against the move, at one point I am with Alessandro that there are still some other alternatives to consider and that brings me to Régis: Why hurry? - hackfest is coming - personal discussions in front of an important decision!
