If I can make it I will participate, but can't help organize right now.

Questions we came up with in our reading group discussion:
* Solidarity:
* technical assistance
* what are they currently using to coordination their organisation?
* what online platforms? can we / floss community help ?
* political support
* how do you co-ordinate collaboration
* FOSS?
* Affiliate membership
* outside influence/ assistance
* online portal?
* Nuts and bolts of getting people together
* keeping notes, meeting process etc.
* formal Roberts Rules approach
* informal tech approach (real time minutes and access to notes)
* how do you get everyone to participate? inclusion?
* process fatigue: all ideas need to get involved
* how to come to a decision about how to make decisions (without getting bogged down by the process/ discussion)
* Digital divide
* platform co-op world vs. capitalist platform world
* what is CJ using? (same/similar as Neil's question)
* area for supporting CJ from social.coop
* how do they see coop model working in other parts of the world?
* without the same strong social bonds that are present in jackson?
* (also raised about mondragon too, simlar repression in the basque country)
* CJ is not only coop solution in black community in the south
* what is the relationship with other groups?
* doesn't come in the news
* Where is the funding coming from for CJ?
* Grassroots organizing vs. elected officials
* getting elected officials (getting people in power) to use state resources = long term strategy

Here is the "membership" category I mentioned: Friends of Cooperation Jackson. Includes building markets and building national/international networks among other things. https://cooperationjackson.org/start-a-friends-of-jackson/

Jeff, what do you think of proposing that social.coop become an official "Friend of Cooperation Jackson" with a small donation? We could also ask CJ people if they have digital needs and see if any of us can help?

JH

Jeff Hardin Tue 24 Apr 2018

Sure! Should I start a vote and if so, in here - or start a new thread? In the meantime I'll reach out to CJ to see if they have any specific guidelines that we might want to be mindful of. Does all that sound good, and have any details been missed? Should we further discuss?

Matt Noyes Tue 24 Apr 2018

Makes sense to contact them - thanks! I guess we should make the proposal first in the membership (aka community) working group and see what people think, then propose it to the group.

Outcome

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll reach out to CJ to see what I can find out about the Friends membership category. If anyone would like to be included in these communications, please let me know.

Should we recommend to the wider social.coop community that we support the work of CJ by becoming a Friend of Cooperative Jackson? This category of membership could include a small monetary contribution, but it could also be an opportunity for social.coop to engage with and support CJ in other ways.

Linking the Friends of CJ scope of activities here - https://cooperationjackson.org/start-a-friends-of-jackson/

Please share your thoughts! I will also be reaching out to CJ soon, so if you would like any questions related to this proposal included in my outreach please let me know.

I would want to wait on this decision until after the chat with them, and would want something like this to be included in the larger budget discussion.

I like the idea very much but it is important to build interest and support before moving too far forward, so I endorse Matt C's suggestions. Still good for Jeff to reach out to CJ to get a better idea of what support they need.

CW

The form and strength of our support can be decided over time. We might form our own chapter of Friends of CJ or join an existing chapter. We would need someone from our community to build these relationships. The content will emerge with the call.

Another alternative might be to combine this with the outreach to Kali Akuno and include the "Friends" email contact. Whatever might make the most sense.

MN

Matt Noyes Sat 28 Apr 2018

I guess at this point it makes sense to focus on the online chat, making that useful, and then return to the discussion. I will follow up with Kali Akuno about the chat and keep people posted here.

Matt Noyes Wed 30 May 2018

Well, after a couple of tries, I have failed to get a reply from Brandon King and Kali Akuno at Cooperation Jackson. @jeffhardin -- would you be up for approaching them? Some times a different person/approach works.

JH

Jeff Hardin Mon 4 Jun 2018

Sure. Are there specifics around the ask? (Timing/topics for discussion, etc.?) I can keep it generic as well.

MN

Matt Noyes Tue 5 Jun 2018

Hi Jeff, sorry not to reply sooner. I would say, feel free. Whatever you think would make for a good discussion. Thanks!

JH

Jeff Hardin Tue 5 Jun 2018

Sounds good and no need to apologize - I was away from the community last week so I am the laggard here. :)

In checking in on their web site, I cannot find anything newer than February in terms of local events. This seems strange. Having heard they are going through a rough patch, I have placed a calendar reminder to follow up on this next month.

Just a quick update to share that I reached out to CJ Tuesday to see if Mr. Akuno or another rep might spend some time with our group via video chat. Will let you know if I hear anything back.
