Creating a physical space for TEZA

TB Tim Barlow Public Seen by 35

At this early stage of TEZA I'd like to discuss all ideas on a physical space for TEZA in Christchurch in October 2013

Thanks for your talk of apps @harry and that gapfiller app @jgrey
I am a little allergic to talk of apps as I think there is a current buzz around them and a lot of invisibility after launch. But given that Gap Filler has one I would like us to add to it with our Letting Space projects rather than re-inventing the wheel and will talk to Coralie and Ryan to this end.

There has been some suggestion that a physical site was not necessary. It was a good provocation. But given that most of our proposed the projects are no longer digital (and we've shifted from the ISEA context) I really believe that the only way to breathe each others' air and share ideas is through a fixed physical site.

This week I'm going to propose where that might be and I'd like everyone to throw their thoughts back at me.
Next week I'm going to do the same with the length and date of the project.
The following week we should have heard about funding from CNZ and we can discuss the scope of the projects.

Hi Sophie - in a city council 'community profile' on Aranui the following is given "Before the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 the Aranui /Wainoni area had three of the eight
Burwood/Pegasus Council community facilities. Following the earthquakes the Aranui Community Hall was
demolished, and the Wainoni/Aranui Family centre is closed due to not meeting the new building
standards. The third Aranui facility is a small, windowless building used as a boxing gym and known locally
as 'the bunker'." I'm rather taken with this....

Michelle, that's really interesting and something not considered - what happens when the actual community centres don't exist anymore? What does a transitional or new form of community centre then look like? Here in Wellington I have found working at 19 Tory Street inspiring in terms of a collectively run community centre in a vacant space and in itself offers some inspiration.
J.Gray that is some beautiful writing you share - I hope it is being shared elsewhere as well! As an outsider I naturally become very nervous of stating my appreciation of the beauty of the earthquake affected Chch as the practise of the voyeur/tourist (back to those buses!)

We mount the TEZA in Aranui (Oct/November time) Closed Tue 14 May 2013 8:21PM

That we mount TEZA out of the CBD

Let's gauge people's perspectives on whether staging the TEZA project in Aranui rather than the CBD is the best use of our collective creative energies.

We would aim to leave the place in some way improved.

We go in knowing the concerns about picking the poster child of the dispossessed classes. So this is our challenge: how to enter as strangers and leave having made a mark that will last.

Using the Abstain option, not to abstain (no other option), but to indicate neutrality. No strong feelings either way. I can see advantages (funding, physical location, less commercial pressures) and disadvantages (aid fatigue, multiple disfunctions)

For now (and decisions can be changed) the Aranui community is most compelling as the place in most need, if we have Nathan Pohio acting as the local guide to the area.

I've always supported situating TEZA where there is most need
