Creating a physical space for TEZA

TB Tim Barlow Public Seen by 35

At this early stage of TEZA I'd like to discuss all ideas on a physical space for TEZA in Christchurch in October 2013

Ha ha Tim - a teaser, literally!

Hi all, really enjoying this discussion. Two things:
1. Really interested in the open source mapping ideas - these fit 'squarely' with the TEZAs intent to not impose maps but provide temporary systems/structure to allow people to build them and build layers of memory and ideas. Can anyone give some more specific links to precedents elsewhere online we can look at?

  1. Secondly, the discussion Sophie and I have been having a lot over recent weeks (and was touched on briefly at the Physics Room discussion) is: should TEZA be sited in the city centre as yet another transitory project (and in the 2013 context) following the series of events that dominate Chch Arts Festival, Scape and FESTA? Or can it afford to do things differently site wise in its wish to focus on community development and interchange with transitory groups (and this is where your mobile idea at the beginning of this discussion is interesting Tim) i.e. might we be better to be making waves/ripples real tangible impact by being offcentre, suburban but on a major traffic route. Hence Sophie's mention of Aranui (big path - sea to city) and its different cultural make-up, but also significant earthquake effected physical areas? As you can probably tell we are very actively interested in looking at this second option very hard at this early stage.

Re the inflatables thread that started in the Introducing TEZA discussion. They key I still think Tim is reusing material/recycling from the existing that you have previously discussed re Sydney and Chch. (and here the reuse of Gaylene's sets is a rather fetching fiction/faction idea!) I think we also need robust discussion about creating yet more transitional design schemes from outside rather than bringing together lots of the amazing work already happening in Chch.

Hi Mark - really support the Aranui location! Interestingly Labour politician Mabel Howard (1894-1972) lived there at one time (In 1947 she became New Zealand's first woman cabinet minister when she was made Minister of Health and Minister in charge of Child Welfare. Apparently she is remembered for waving two large pairs of bloomers in parliament in support of her successful campaign to have clothing sizes standardised!)

Just had a really top conversation with @NathanPohio around Hampshire Park in Aranui (now seemingly re-named Wainoni Park). Hampshire St was once regarded as Christchurch's most dangerous St. Nathan suggested some healing to the shops, a fix up, some painting, some planting - it's quite desolate. They've just renovated and reopened the Aranui library http://christchurchcitylibraries.com/aranui/ but other than that there is not much investment in the community.
@kimpaton @jgrey are you familiar with this area?

Love it @jgrey! Are you saying there's more to Christchurch than the earthquake!?

You weave a hell of a tale J, thanks :)

Hi @everyone ;)

@markamery ranting re; the mapping examples stuff on another angle. CrowdMap looks promising. https://crowdmap.com/mhi/ its a cloud server thingy made on top of http://www.ushahidi.com/ which is commonly used in disaster type maps and is Open Source goodness. I like how they are thinking about maps in a loose term relating to the understanding of information, you can bung in what you like and mash it all up. (I'd like to build/use tools to map journeys on the WWW which is getting increasingly complex these days.)

I thought http://www.waze.com/ is potentially an interesting example of a very popular map startup at the other end of the spectrum that could be flipped so instead of getting you from A to B faster it perhaps helps you get lost, helps you go where you haven't been etc. This has probably been done already but its not easy to find = not on the top 10 on my 1st google search.

I think it can be very difficult to get good uptake of apps. Which is why CrowdMap helps because you can also interact via other tech eg Twitter FaceCrack and I think email and SMS. From there I think you still need very strong links to physical reality. QR codes and RFID can help but not nearly as much as public tours or people who feel empowered by a tool and want to share it.

Oh look I found a map about abandoned buildings in London on CrowdMap!! https://inemptybuildings.crowdmap.com/reports/view/2 they have a FB and website too: http://ma.ke-u.se/ yay.

Another mapping thing I'd like artists to get into that is finally coming into play is Augmented Reality. Ive been working with an artist who uses http://www.aurasma.com/ which is pretty easy for basic sticking an image onto anything you want in the real word. If you had a group of people using it there is potential for some quite nice stuff as you can subscribe to each others augmentations of reality but only experience them when you are in the physical location. Hard to explain... Have a TED explanation of it: http://bit.ly/18yyhbb

Random App for the day...
People standing at the bus stop, they never used to talk to each other, but now they stare into their phones and talk to others not around them. Can an app change this so we connect to the people and places in our real environment rather than our ideal external world?
I'm imagining something the same idea as "Bang With Friends" http://www.bangwithfriends.com/ but instead of wanting to Bang people you want to communicate, Eg; if you have the TEZA app it will tell you when there are other TEZAs around and should also trick you into thinking someone is a TEZA so you start chatting to them regardless. its like SkypeMe mode on Skype where your status is set to "my door is open" I notice that function is no longer available, I guess people use Chatroulette for that, which illustrates the issue I'm interested in. Using the tools for transition rather than this continued entrenchment.
