Creating a physical space for TEZA

TB Tim Barlow Public Seen by 35

At this early stage of TEZA I'd like to discuss all ideas on a physical space for TEZA in Christchurch in October 2013

I'd like to assist in creating a physical space for TEZA. I'm suggesting it could be a mobile space, that possibly folds out from a trailer unit that can be towed by any vehicle. The idea is this is the central meeting place, and operates according to principles of Maori tikanga. But maybe this is problematic from the start!. I'm thinking here of potentially connecting with different areas of Christchurch, having a mobile freedom for location and not putting additional pressure on the need for space/home base?

Go the brain fizzes JG! I like this idea,Do you know is there currently an art/public art map of Christchurch? Maybe a downloadable app like the one the Buller library developed for the Denniston Rose trail on the West Coast could work? I have no idea how much time/work is involved in developing an app like this. It sounds like you could be the go-to person for this! i know a group at Otago University developed the Denniston Rose app, do you know more about this?

I noticed that when I google mapped Christchurch even at the end of 2012 it was showing pre-quake times. Now there is a new satellite pass but JG has another point here that Christchurch is changing so rapidly ,conventional forms of mapping like google are just
useless (and of course only in a conventional mapping as aerial view way anyway)
The idea of an open source map that can be altered is really exciting and much more interesting than a purely passive map. Maybe the Denniston Rose model can be adapted, it includes readings that can be activated at particular places, but if sites, locations can be updated by an open source model this could really make it a happening thing! I know the group Rekindle has assembled a publication of as many public art projects as possible so they could be a great connection point. Also Trudy Lane as a potential project for TEZA is proposing using a software app to trigger a GPS activated soundscape on a walking project. Maybe these projects could be connected, or theres lots of potential for connections!
I must say I'm a sucker for Treasure Hunt as well, I think this is a great way to attract people to the project

Thanks JG, I like Barnaby's blog, makes thoughtful reading, makes me even more determined that there is value to be had in mixing some artists from around NZ into a Christchurch experience!

Tim re your question on street art - I think Reuben Woods is the guy you mean, he's a Masters (potentialy commuting to PhD last I looked) student at UC who has also been working with Wongi and Icarus on the grafitti art programme within Art Beat over summer in Re:Start. This is the blog: http://www.whatisthatchch.co.nz/
Also this http://bud2012.tumblr.com/ which is good for a laugh if your in the arts

@jgrey Hi Jemes do you have any sites that you've been placing or documenting your ideas on?

Hi J (is it James?) Just going back 'Restart Mall has been 'fed customers' at little or no cost to themselves by various LIVS (Life in Vacant Spaces) style events. Exploitative model which is not sustainable' and I thoroughly get that, yet weirdly it can work the other way. I was set up for my Gap Filler show 'The Fieldman Academy' right next door in Oxford Tce capturing the people turning up to a re:Start event which just happened to be on the same day ( I was going with the Mairehau Primary School's calendar). Then the 'complaining guy' ( a well know identity who has been known to irritate the heck out of people by exercising his right to free speech) set up near me to begin his tirade against ...everything. It was quite interesting

J Grey - Reuben's masters/PhD thesis is dealing with the backstory to some extent in looking at art produced in public spaces in Christchurch across various modes of production since the earthquakes. Apologies for getting your comment confused with Tim's

I'm still thinking about this open source public art map, (possibly amidst some more interesting and complex conversations going on!) Just getting away democratic ideals here for a moment I want to suggest an idea ,this is a hard copy map along the lines of the Bangkok Art Map (BAM) or Groovy Map models (sorry no links). Basically an old fashioned waterproof map of the city but with a lot of detailed information on sites of great public art. But we have to connect up with all these blogs, organisations etc,i.e. everyone who has already been mapping these projects, and somehow decide what we can fit on the map? But heres the catch, theres an online access to the clues to find the map!. I'm not just playing games here, some of these overseas hardcopy maps are very hard to scan etc and there could be ways to make this even harder (i.e digital reproduction) so the map can only function in a hard copy form. I've got some ideas on where and how this map is located but of course I can't give that away now!
