Stable value creation & monetization of hApps

P pospi Public Seen by 9

Last sync we had some really interesting discussion of investment sustainability and how asset-backed currencies might feature in the development of responsible hApps. Since then this topic has crossed over into a lot of other areas, which I've tried to give a clear handle on in a way that is approachable to newcomers who may not have encountered any of these concepts before.

Draft of the article can be found here. All comments & critiques welcomed here or there, in particular areas I have called out in the document flow. I'm particularly interested if you can see:

  • Important topics I have missed

  • Other concerns that traditional investment & capital may need addressed

  • Stuff reflecting on the current crypto market slump and the fact that most of this is hypothetical

In particular CC @Emaline who might want to take parts of this into the BftGC Frontiers paper, @Sid Sthalekar whom has been deep in discussions in the business course, and @Carolyn Beer who may eventually want to tailor this for publication on the Holochain blog with me (:

I wrote (and piggybacked on) some comments in the doc. Fantastic work @pospi and super incisive comments from @Sid Sthalekar !

Great article. I'm really curious to learn more about promises. We're all experiencing a breakdown of supply chains during the pandemic. Are supply chains of promises more, less or equally disrupt-able than the incumbent financial system in a systemic crisis?

My main lens is resilience - since its a unifying root for many social and technical movements. So strongly validating that promise based systems are more resilient for more people during systemic crises would be compelling.

I strongly second highlighting limitations of the mutual credit model - I'm thinking also of the fact that JO is planning on creating JOOLES coupons (and opening them up to trading) before JOOLES, which is to say that the HOT --> HF model, the speculative component for startup funds, is what's currently promoted in the Holoverse.

Wowza! That was a detailed piece. There's some real gold in here: I think it's the section on cloning/forking in Holochain and what that means for business models in the eco-system.
I've added a whole chunk of feedback in the HackMD file (apologies for messing the readability for others :p), but here's a summary:

  • I would suggest reducing the section on Ethereum and Crypto - maybe just mentioning what went wrong as a summary. (i.e. models based in scarcity not sufficiency)

  • For traditional investors, I've made some suggestions on various points i.e. explaining how this classifies as a traditional financial instrument, how it's value stable (and relevant in a post-COVID world), how models here are co-operative in nature, not private companies issuing shares.

  • I think you should also highlight limitations with the mutual credit model. For eg, ultimately promises lead to initiation debits that may not be fulfilled and that has its share of risk. But as opposed to a model based on speculation, this is based on 'risking together', which has a more human feel to it imo. It would go a long way in making this a balanced argument that acknowledges where sh*t could go wrong in this universe.

  • You're on to something with the provenance curve. Added my thoughts on culture and forking. I like that you end on an exploratory note.

Maybe another topic to be discussed on our next Economikit call!

Would love to contribute, particularly with info about technical financial jargon/business models, and the provenance curve + motivations in this new space.

Also am totally open to anyone who wants to be a central collaborator on this to co-author it with me, it's a big bit of logic to bite off and I expect more authors would do it more justice.
