Sandra Sarala and Daniela Gast
Sandra Sarala
two independent performance artists from Berlin
Thursday 14 March
Performance
as we are approaching the autumn equinox, this would be a (loosely) harvest-themed show, with a few 'ritual' elements to involve the audience (mainly to do with food!).
I, Sandra Sarala, am a singer and performance poet.
Daniela Gast is a (site specific) video performance artist.
Normally we both live in Berlin but are currently in New Zealand (at opposite ends of the country).
My singing work includes archaic East European folk song from Ukraine, Russia and Poland, as well as my own material. My songs are quite varied in repertoire, some melancholic, others jazzy, some a bit folky, others performative and/or comedic employing melodrama/Commedia dell'Arte technique. My poetry and spoeken word work explores a lot of different territory, though there often seems to be an exploration of 'home'. I've givien you a link below.
Daniela's work includes performance, projected video and a soundscape. Very beautiful, mesmerising. Her work is site specific and would be adapted especially for 19 Tory Street. There's also a link to her work below
I have previously performed in Wellington at Sound Explorers, in Paekakariki, and in Auckland at Poetry Live and I was a member of Red Mole's Roadworks company with Sally Rodwell and Alan Brunton. I will be doing a show in Auckland with Audio Foundation at the end of March. It also looks like I will be taking part in Noel Meek's crypt series.
Technical needs are fairly minimal and we are able to set up and pack out very quickly.

thank you both @richarddbartlett and @benjaminknight for your advice, and help!
i have just emailed sandra letting her know the 14th eve is already booked, suggesting instead that earlier on the 14th day, the 13th eve before belly dancing or the 15th eve are free at this stage.
let's see what they say.
updates to follow.

so sandra just emailed saying that they would prefer the 14th evening post the gen-zero meeting at 8.30. is that okay?
if not, she said she would be okay with the 15th eve although she is fully aware that is when people would be going away to womad.

Thanks for that @deeparosemsealy! I'll check with Gen Zero to make sure they'll definitely be finished by 8.30pm and let you know :)
Does Sandra know that everything needs to be totally over by 10pm? Would that give them enough time to set up etc?
Deepa-Rose M. Sealy Sat 2 Mar 2013 6:49PM
just emailed her about the 10pm finish. x
Lulu Sat 2 Mar 2013 10:57PM
The Generation Zero meeting will definitely be finished by 8.30 :) We could be out of there by 8 if needed
Benjamin Knight Sat 2 Mar 2013 11:01PM
That was much easier than the email I was about to send - thanks @lulu!

this is what sandra just sent me!
thoughts on sound?
and it is now going to be on the 15th evening.
"sound levels ... I am generally at acoustic level, simply because I work only with vocals. Though where the archaic songs are concerned, because of the open voice technique they are designed to be sung in the fields and to travel over long distances (imagine calling someone in for dinner from a kilometre away), so those songs are often loud. However I almost always go 'off-PA' with them as any dispersal through electronic equipment (in my opinion) distorts the true qualities and resonance of the voice - it is more interesting to utilise the existing acoustic qualities of the space
Daniela creates a soundscape for her work which is usually amped up a bit, but her pieces are not always at a consistently loud volume, there is variation. She is creating a special piece for this show however, so I am not sure exactly what sound she is using. All this being said, in any case she is a site-specific installation artist, so anything she does is fitted to the needs and qualities of the space.
the 14th
hm... deep thought... I think that even for us, and for the audience as well, and chances to talk with people afterwards, a 90 minute turn-around would not be workable or comfortable - if there were to be any technical questions during set-up we would run behind schedule and there's not really any room to move.. we like relaxed! Also as Daniela will need to borrow a projector - if you know anyone who can lend her one we will be eternally grateful - it will be unfamiliar equipment and bugbears are slightly more likely (tho not inevitable)
the 15th
So maybe we do have to bite the bullet and go with the 15th and trust that not all potential audience members are heading away up to WOMAD"

confirmed to be on the 15th evening starting at 7.30pm, so it coincides with the darkening evening. (have put it on the calendar) x

daniela was asking whether she could borrow a projector off somebody?! x

Hey Rose - really sorry if this is a pain but it looks like the only time the Gen Zero meeting can work is on the 14th from 5.30pm-8pm. Are you able to contact Sandra and Daniela to see if they have any flexibility?
