A suggested plan for TEZA

RDB Richard D. Bartlett Public Seen by 17

Tim and I had a conversation this week and I came away with a really clear picture of what TEZA could be. I'd be interested to hear how this lands with others:

  • we erect some kind of structure somewhere (e.g.)
  • commissioned artists have times allocated where they can use this space
  • local artists and other community initiatives can apply to use the structure
  • we (Tezans and others) use Loomio to collaboratively decide who gets to use the space and how it runs

In other words, this is essentially a popup replica of the 19 Tory St project.

Tory St has always had a very open brief, but by framing the invitation carefully, we've managed to gently curate a certain degree of coherence in the events there.

I'm confident we could do something similar for TEZA: communicating an intention for what we'd like to achieve, while allowing for local initiatives to emerge and inform us and each other.

What do you think?

Hi Richard, In brief from me yes! This thought follows through where I'd suggest we are naturally going. The gently curate notion is one shared, and the connections between 19 Tory and TEZA are for me very strong. Whether it can simply be a popup replica of the model? Yes, maybe. A clear difference as I think you're already intimating is that there will be a set of commissioned artists projects (i.e./ already planks in the programme) as well as a platform open to all submissions (although I guess one could argue with relationships like UDBetc there are already some predetermined spokes at Tory) there are some differences? How this might hang together might depend on the projects and their needs and the resultant gaps the gentle curation feels need to be filled for it to work as a strong community of people and works. A tension between open source and curation? Again I think its a good tension and one that has marked out for us some good Letting Space projects. But again that doesn't strike me as at odds with a Tory Street approach. We should have a better idea within a fortnight where the mix of projects is heading.

Hi @richarddbartlett thanks for this! I like what you're suggesting. However it really doesn't feel like 19 Tory St to me because there is a really clear kaupapa and a standard of presentation to all the projects that operate within TEZA. And 19 Tory St is really really open? It feels quite a clear distinction but you may have some further clarification I'm not understanding.

@sophiejerram yes I was thinking TEZA would have a tighter kaupapa than Tory St, I'm just suggesting we could keep it porous enough for local initiatives to emerge into.

Curating with kid gloves instead of an iron fist :P
