rent party was common in NYC: you have an event every month to make up the shortfall- this could be a market where everything’s made and donated or a day where everyone refurbished bikes for sale (or whatever) key is the whole community comes together to donate their time and convert that into money

What s the shortfall, on average per month?

As a one-off, or an occasional thing, a garage sale could work, it could help get rid of a lot of the clutter.

It would be great if we could have more meetup sessions to bring in people to do activities electronics/programming etc. Need more champions to run it.

Sausage sizzle at Bunnings -- probably not a solution for the immediate need as I think they may need to be booked way in advance, but could be a good thing to try in the future while maybe also getting some more people to hear about Hackland that way.

no consensus reached - explore other options

To build up a survival buffer, we could offer year long memberships for say $500

Really depends on the level of discount offered -- $500/year is a discount of ~35%, which I think is way too high. It will help with cash flow now, but at the expense of getting even less money in overall and putting us in a worse position 6 months down the line. Something like $700/year might be sustainable. Overall though I think we should try to approach this as motivating people to chip in to keep Hackland alive, rather enticing them with a cheaper membership deal.

Everyone who voted and is actually a member has agreed, so we will begin suggesting $20 as the minimum amount weekly to join, except for it this too much or for students

As the most populat outcome from the ranked choice thing, and easy to put in place, how do we feel about increasing the suggested minimum for regular members?

Rent out the upstairs HL1 back room. Closed 2:02pm - Monday 15 Jul 2019

Sublet the upstairs HL1 back room to an external group for $100 at least per week. It doesn't get used much.

Just to know how much extra is needed to make hackland fall on its feet again? Are we missing $100/week?

Tentatively agree - but should make sure that members know to pay less if they otherwise can’t afford it. It would be counterproductive to lose members with a price hike

Helena

Helena July 12th, 2019 04:40

With the move of ALOT, there was talk about a bigger contribution, too. Any pricerange being discussed?

Absolutely. It's a suggested fee after all, so no one is being compelled, but hackland needs to be financially sustainable, and we're not doing anyone any favours if the membership is set too low.

I think it would be a cool idea to use the back room as member storage & other projects (screen printing etc), and maybe move one of the couches in there too - so it's the the chill space. Then we tidy up HL1 front room and make that more of a computer working space. This way we create more space in the well used areas, and may attract more people to join to use the space as a workspace. Just my thoughts anyway :)

Amanda Chapman

Amanda Chapman July 15th, 2019 00:03

No price discussion yet. We could bump it to $75 per week, anything more and ALoT will have a financial crisis too lol, the troubles of relying on new members!

Amanda Chapman

Amanda Chapman July 15th, 2019 00:04

Really keen for workshops/events with a small entry fee! Will bring in dosh & new people @ the same time. Lu & I are planning a clothes swap party already :)

There was mention of the top back room of HL1 being rented out. I know someone who is interested to rent the space and have access to HL too. What is required to pursue this option?

Helena

Helena August 8th, 2019 09:32

As that room is currently underutilised - I'm not opposed to that idea. As long as their use doesn't impede on members using the rest of the space (e.g. they require no noise for example)
