Community group working bees on cycle paths

MG Myles Green Public Seen by 36

Getting out with a spade and just digging and great fun actually. There are probably many projects around the city where we can get in three and work with the city council to speed up the construction of cycle paths.

Please add you ideas as proposals here so we can get the ball rolling.

There has been some of this in the past but it has been hampered by Council not having clear standards required before they will maintain a community built facility. We have had offers by contractors fall by the wayside because Council was not dynamic enough to be able to hand a project to them. This is likely to need a strong guiding hand from Councillors demanding via the CEO that this is made easier.

Council working alongside community can achieve more with the tight budgetary constraints the city has.

As a rep of a community group in the process of building a shared-use cycle/walkway in Waipu, I have found the council quite responsive to helping with co-ordination of volunteer efforts, but I still prefer the GUERILLA GARDENING method!

I believe by having better walkways and cycleways we will encourage more of all NZ off the road. this will be better environmentally, socially, for health and local businesses.

A good idea - not sure exactly how this would work but in theory great!

The mountain bike tracks on the back of Parihaka were a good example of council working with volunteers on cycle facilities, were they not? I was not involved.
