Update #REBillOfRights by integrating Self-sovereign Identity Bill of Rights

“Furthermore, consumer representatives were not present at Disconnect, which makes this problematic in a different way.“

#RE2020 applauds efforts to open silo’ed data across the emerging real estate ecosystem, but this blog post reflects the blind spot that happens when well-intended real estate elites discuss the future of open data without including the most important stakeholders: — “we the people.”

Efforts to create a Real Estate Consumer Bill of Rights date back 17 years — see list of collaborators on petition submitted to Federal Reserve Board & Congress:

Invite real estate consumer advocates and tech innovators to begin updating #REBillOfRights to reflect Self-sovereign Identity Bill of Rights. Hope to facilitate a session in the next 48 hours at #IIW:

PS. We would be remiss if we did not mention that today’s post coincides the 25th Anniversary of the Consumer Revolution in Real Estate, a two-day event hosted in Boston. Ralph Nader and Steve Brobeck of the Consumer Federation of America keynoted the event which predated widespread use of the internet:

As a baseline, submit this two-fold assumption:

(1) OPEN #HousingID's will become a new building block in the emerging real estate ecosystem, and

(2) Numerous vendors will compete based on functionality.

This hack proposes one vision, created in a weekend during the Computational Law & Blockchain Fest (#CLBFest) our team, called MyUtopiaID:

Have blogged a number of times over the past two decades about what might be included in a Real Estate Consumer Bill of Rights, see search results:

http://bit.ly/REBillRghts

Erle Rawlins III included 10 rights in his first list, published in 1999; and subsequently added five more in 2011:

Eager to layer GDPR rights on top of the dated lists above and invite fellow real estate consumer advocates and tech innovators to envision an updated Real Estate Consumer Bill of Rights:

Thanks to all who participated in the lunch session, as notes on our whiteboard suggest we’ve just begun this conversation. If you missed the link earlier in this thread, here’s one vision of what #HousingID’s will enable when real estate consumers excercise their right to leverage personal data:

Harvard Business School is hosting a day long event on Blockchain. Is anyone on this list attending? Regardless, post this thread on Twitter in response to the question addressed by one of the panels:

CROWDSOURCING: What is Killer App on Blockchain? Decentralized, #P2P #RealEstate transactions will deliver BILLIONS in consumer savings by leveraging #TechTsunami to disintermediate traditional agents. Post #IIW, drafting #REBillOfRights http://bit.ly/ConsREvRights

NEXT STEP: Anyone want to meet offline in Boston to follow-up on this thread, deconstruct the Self-sovereign Bill of Rights above (and ultimately the GDPR regs), to update a Real Estate Consumer Bill of Rights?

Just tweeted link to this group and delighted to hear questions unfolding about GDPR:

Q #Zuckerberg ducked in Congress is coming to #RealEstate: “Are you willing to change your business model in the interest of protecting individual #privacy?” If your answer is YES, join #RE2020's workgroup to coauthor #REBillOfRights

Started this thread nearly two weeks ago after discovering the Self-Sovereign Bill of Rights linked above. What's the best way to connect with conversations about consumer privacy rights outside the real estate echo chamber? Here's a post inspired by a panel three years ago at the Consumer Assembly, an annual event hosted by the Consumer Federation of America / @ConsumerFed. How can we link privacy conversations post-Facebook to CFA's concerns about the use, potential abuse of personal data?

After the screenshot below was posted on Inman Coast-to-Coast, a private Facebook group, shared this comment / invitation for real estate innovators to join our conversation:

— — —

Is it ironic or appropriate that this business practice is being flagged on the 17th anniversary of the call for a Real Estate Consumer Bill of Rights? On May 1, 2001 a petition signed by 38 real estate consumer advocates was submitted to the Federal Reserve Board to form a Real Estate Consumer Alliance and draft a Real Estate Consumer Bill of Rights:

http://bit.ly/RECALL2001

The next day, an attorney for Consumer Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports, echoed the call asking “Are consumers being treated fairly by real estate brokers? Are commissions priced fairly?" in his testimony before the Committee on Financial Services Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit.

As mega-brokers morph into data companies and Facebook failings underline the need to protect personal data and privacy, let’s use the anniversary to update the #REBillOfRights. Here’s a partial history of attempts to draft a real estate or homebuyer bill of rights, including one by Redfin, dating back to 1999:

While some may prefer to focus on playing defense against unfair and deceptive business practices, other innovators outside the real estate industry are eager to help consumers leverage new digital “superpowers” to manage their digital identity and save money.
