Register of Community Forest Gardens

FP Felix Pivcevic Public Seen by 109

Hi I'm Felix Pivcevic, Paul's son and very interested in helping to influence food and wellbeing policies while I prepare to start a Masters in Public Policy in the Autumn.

I know you have had interest from Henry Dimbleby's team at DEFRA who are writing the National Food Strategy.

They seem keen to know just how many community agroforestry projects are in existence, what purpose they have, how many people involved, and what impact they may be having on what people eat, food growing skills and so on.

Could you message me with a paragraph if you are part of such a project, or signpost me to one? As many as possible please!

Many thanks.

There is a newly established community forest garden in Cardigan/Aberteifi. Very sadly, one of the founders, Alpay Torgut, has just passed away. They have been working with local schools.

Hello Felix,

Charmian has forwarded your email to me. I am not a community garden, I am a professional forest gardener. I help others understand the concept through tours and courses. Give advice to individuals through consultancy and supply the right selection of plants for the southwest from my nursery.
I am a firm believer that all communities should have their own forest garden as part of the mix of how their food is provided, it encourages localism, community connections and spreads the risk of food supply should there be problems with the main distribution networks ( trucks coming down the A30).
There is always more but I will park the subject there for now.
If you feel I can contribute you have my email address.
Kind Regards

Simon Miles

Hi Felix I’m a member of two community forest gardens in Bath: one at Larkhall Allotments, the other in Alice Park. Both are just getting going. I’ll find out more about the sims are at the next meeting and let you know.

Hi Felix We have a roof top forest garden planted 18 years ago; 200m2 185 different species/varieties of useful plant. Where possible we include a forest garden element in all our community gardens - over 25 developed in Reading over the past 10 years. We specialise in training for teachers to max the educational value of the outdoor classroom.

Hi Felix I would look into Permaculture gardens as I imagine there will be many more, that should include some aspects of forest gardening, as well. Myself and my partner are trying with our 24 acres, that is privately owned in East Ayrshire, with limited community access for artists and environmental groups, moving towards outdoor education, but have a lack of funds for plants, so go with what we can access cheap or free at the moment, which have been mostly indigenous trees and shrubs as the starting point. We have had 4 acres for 20 years that was pasture and is now woodland, wild meadow, small orchard, ponds, wetland, with a quarter acre of veg plot. We acquired a further 20 acres 5 or 6 years ago that is also being rewilded with roughly 2,000 trees, recently planted, with 600 in bubble wrap pattern, circles of varying sizes for future outdoor classrooms the rest primarily for wildlife, with some trees for fuel and craft wood use, such as willow and hazel, with only a few fruit and nut trees so far, although that is the next step as soon as we can acquire them. We would dearly love to get hold of more trees, edible perennial under story plants and are moving in that direction whenever we can find funds or plants and would welcome anything offered. Thank you for your interest [email protected]

Hello I'm leading the creation of Marston Forest Garden https://www.facebook.com/groups/1481665848647595/ in North Oxford; 10 abandoned allotment plots joined together to create space to plant 18 trees this year, 7 more next year; part of Marston Community Gardening - more people join each work session.

Hi Antony, thank you for your reply! could you perhaps give me some more information on:

The location/address

What is the purpose of the forest garden/ why you were compelled to set it up?

The impact you have made (if at all at this stage)

and finally, what kind of plants/animals are involved.

thanks again,

Felix
