How do we make decisions together?

PJ Peter Jacobson Public Seen by 386

How will we make decisions about our community?

How will we answer questions like:
- "What is the process for new people joining?"
- "Where shall we host the next hui?"

From my thoughts and some ideas from initial conversations with folks, things that seem important in decision making are:
- Accessible for everyone to participate
- That we don't get blocked by "bureaucracy"

I have a two great friends who are interested in joining who I want to invite - I think they would be a joy to have around and could help create wonderful things with us. It's been 3 weeks, and I have no idea how to start that conversation. Perhaps this would be a good place.

Would be great for you to have a play around on this platform. If you have time, try making threads and commenting/voting/making proposals in others threads.

If you have any questions or confusions, call me (Pete) on 02040 758 702 :

I've used loomio a fair bit now, and it's the best way I've seen to make collaborative decisions in an open and accessible way for high participation and good quality discussion

I've found Loomio an incredible too to make decisions with people when you can't do it in person.

I like Loomio for making decisions personally and think this is a worthwhile experiment, but waiting to see what level of engagement there is. Value face-to-face over online at this stage as it serves double purpose of building whakawhanaungatanga

I'd prefer to put off the big decisions (e.g., how we add people to the network) until we have the next hui, but I like the idea of trialling Loomio as an experiment to host discussions and make some smaller decisions (e.g., when and where the next hui is). Would love to see Loomio being used by a majority of the network, it would make discussions much easier. However, also conscious that we have different levels of tech-saviness in the network and I wouldn't want Loomio to replace face-to-face conversation and phone calls, which help to build whanaungatanga, which I see as more important than decision-making at this stage.

@petejakey Can we change the wording of the proposal to reflect that its an experiment - e.g. "We trial using Loomio to host our decision-making process"?

Also, if it's a trial, how do we know whether it's a success or not - what level of engagement would make it a success? I'd like us to still use face-to-face and phone calls to people who don't respond on Loomio in this early stage, to make sure that we don't just get the people who are comfortable with Loomio on here and contributing to discussions, and the people who aren't as comfortable not having a voice...
