As Emma has pointed out in this discussion, there are a lot of new organisations that are popping up at the moment that are trying to build a culture of giving and sharing outside of the formal economy. Others are working towards building more connected and resilient communities.
I am proposing that we support like-minded organisations that are working within similar philosophies and frameworks. Some of them may appear in competition to timebanks but the greater movement towards community building is more important.

absolutely, even if you are thinking about what is best for 'just timebanks' good relationships with other related groups can help and invigorate timebanking itelf

I really like the idea of supporting like minded/parallel organisations.
I know in particular freecycle has a policy where they like to promote similar organisations/movements (Eg/ New Plymouth Freecycle put up an ad recently pointing members to Taranaki Timebank)
A good start might be as simple as having something on Community Weaver saying "We like these: Freecycle (link), CouchSurfing (link), Wwoof (link)" etc.

I have just signed up on AskShareGive and I love how fast and easy the sign up process is (you don't even need to do email verification!). The whole site is very easy to understand and navigate.
Also, they have some safety suggestions:

But the general philosophy is "The vast majority of people using AskShareGive are genuine, honest and trustworthy people that love to Share." Nobody has to provide references or have a police check done - much less admin for the co-ordinator. They have a feedback system similar to TradeMe, so you can read other people's comments on a user, but there is no ranking system. You can also look at a person's profile to see if they have done a bit of giving as well as taking which I think is a nice feature - it provides incentive to do both (if you can) and it means you can get some good ideas from other people about how to use the site. On community weaver, in addition to the offers and requests, I wish members could see what other members are earning/spending their time credits on (although I suppose you might want to keep some trades private?).
The main differences to time banking, from a casual glance at their listings, seem to be that most people are using it more like freecycle (gifting things, rather than time/skills) and there is no currency component like time credits.
So I suppose my question is, what are your thoughts/ideas about how to work together with like-minded organisations such as AskShareGive?
They are Auckland based so that is where most of the trading is happening for now. The Auckland Timebank group in particular would be a good contact for them and vice versa.
I'll send out an initial email just to say "kia ora!" and let them know about Timebanks and TimeExchange, in case they don't already know about us.
