Team communication tools

Debate and decide on which tools we should be using for communicating amongst the community.

I think we have created a problem by having Discord channels for projects. Trello has threaded conversations, real time app notifications & attachments, and to me it feels like the appropriate place for discussing the jobs because then all activity related to a job is kept within the job and easily accessible & visible there. Does anyone have a different opinion before I create a proposal to shut those channels down?

I mentioned somewhere else that Trello also offers voting. Given. This is lumio also a duplication? I see that there may still be a role for a simple unstructured chat to flag issues like can someone water the garden today as I’m away but maybe that can be accomplished in Trello. Should we give it a try before we launch into discord?

You will need to upgrade the Trello account to business class for voting power. Not sure on cost. My question is image uploading in chat, is it a simple option in trello? Business class is ten bucks a month per user if paid annually.

I still think there's no substitute for loomio when it comes to decision making- not everything is a simple vote and most other tools don't foster the right sort of environment for productive discussion. I recommend you watch the talk in the "ELF Management Update" email I sent out to understand more. Simple unstructured chat is definitely what Discord is for, I'm not suggesting we get rid of it; just the project channels. And Trello handles attachments just fine, from memory it also makes a nice little index of attachments on each job somewhere.

Ok that is settled for now then. We move to discord as well as lumio and Trello

I'll nix the project channel so we are forced to use Trello for project communications.

Ok, that's all cool but i feel like maybe we rushed that one through without giving everyone an opportunity for input. Or maybe this is a case where it just sort of "obviously made sense" and so a group decision wasn't necessary? What are all your thoughts on determining the difference? I'm just cautious it might be a way of bypassing consensus in the future if we aren't careful...

I created it without asking in the first place, being proactive is one of my weaknesses these days. When using Trello to talk to people be sure to tag them in conversation or they won't know it is there. Discord is set to notify everyone of every message currently.

In Discord, at least for me, I had to change my notification settings to be notified of all messages. By default you only seem to get notified of mentions.

I'm keen to dump discord in favour of Loomio for chat and decision-making. Copied this form discord - illustrates the point that it is going to be frustrating having two places talking about the common issues I came to that conclusion today too. Loomio supports replies too which is something I am missing from telegram already! I think if we start a particular thread for each issue that needs discussion then we capture it all in one place and at the right time we can put a proposal and vote on what action to take. Im in favour of dumping discord and just run all discussions and decisions through Loomio and then once a decision is made it goes into trello with the appropriate priority. As for resourcing decisions - they are just that decisions and so Loomio is the right place to discuss the costing spreadsheets for a project and then after we thing we have it reasonably comprehensive we can vote on it. Loomio also supports attached files so I cant see any problem with using it to define, refine and then vote on projects and resourcing then trello is just for tracking progress to completion. If our project costing templates keep track of estimates and actuals then the completed projects can be reviewed back in Loomio so we can debrief and note issues and learnings from the project. this conversation should really be conducted in Loomio now so we can make a decision on dumping discord or not in favour of Loomio
