The name we choose here will have a huge impact! Ideally it would be catchy and engaging while also being specific enough to convey what we are talking about without implying IRV. In reality, we probably can't have it all without adding a tagline so for each option let's add a few short words to follow up. The name will be used for our group, for the ballot initiative and for outreach. The goal is to get Score Runoff Voting enacted in elections and to fix our broken democracy.

Considerations:
* Having too many names to tell people about complicates things and gives people too much to remember off the bat. RCV OR, SRV, and Equal Vote... we really just want to tell people one name/group that covers it. Seeing as the names SRV and Equal Vote already exist to describe the system and the organization that is promoting it those 2 seem like the best options for a few reasons.
The name for the voting system is already "Score Runoff Voting" which is super literal. Using this name cuts right to the chase and specifically explains exactly what we are talking about. The downside is that it's pretty dry and is hard to remember. It doesn't do anything to convey why we need a new system or how this system is better. People I've been talking to keep messing up this name and saying things like ranked score voting or score ranked voting.
"Equal Vote" is a more goal oriented name. We really do want something catchy and memorable so that we can brand the project in a way that will grab people. The downside here is that "Equal" can mean different things to different people and it's not super clear what is meant by "Equal" without getting technical. Here's a simple explanation of what we mean by Equal. This voting system eliminates wasted votes and doesn't favor some voters or candidates over others. My vote is just as strong as your vote.

This is the name of our project to be used for our organization, our ballot measure and our outreach. Location will be added to the end of the name when a specific area is being targeted.

I presented SRV at tonight's Indivisible meeting and got some good feedback. Here are a few re-branding points to help us say the same things but in a more clear or convincing way:
Some people don't love the word "Score". For election enthusiasts it brings to mind bullet voting arguments. For people on Amazon or Yelp they think about it as "Rating".
People love the idea of rating books on Amazon and giving a 5 Star review. What if we change SRV to Star Runoff Voting" or simply "Star Voting"? @nardopolo
Some people don't get what we mean when we say "accurate". They get the word, but not what it means in this context. It's too technical and they overthink it. They would prefer "fair". Instead of saying that a voting system is "inaccurate" they can relate better if we say that it's "frustrating".
People are confused by the terms "runoff" and "instant runoff". This requires more explanation to clarify for people who aren't already familiar with IRV and the instant runoff concept so it's simpler to just avoid that language and use wording that inherently explains the idea using simple terminology. Or don't even explain the runoff unless people ask for more detail. People I talk to seem happy to hear just what they do on the ballot and why its a better system.
A sample pitch using upgraded language:
In our current system we have no idea how many people might support a outsider candidate (like Bernie) because most people are afraid of wasting their vote. Many others don't bother to vote at all because their candidate doesn't stand a chance in their area. In Star Voting even if your favorite can't win you still have a voice. Nobody's vote is wasted and everybody can vote their conscience.
With Star Voting we know who really has the most support because voters give each candidate 0-5 stars. The two highest rated candidates are the finalists. Your ratings already show which finalist you prefer and the winner is the finalist that is preferred by more voters.

Hi Sara, We missed the last meeting (dental numb mouth), and I don't have a Loomio account, so thought I would use this means to share a name idea. To me, the word "vote" is one step removed from the purpose. Voting is just the action - but the purpose is to choose a candidate, so I would suggest "rating (or rate) the candidates" or "ranking (or rank) the candidates." People have answered questionnaires that give them a range of choices, so it might help with familiarity. Anyway, that's my two cents.
