Mental health/stress policy

KW Kate Whittle Public Seen by 132

Hello Loomio pals: One of my (small) co-op clients wants to develop written policy and supporting resources for members dealing with issues of mental health or stress/anxiety. They asked me if I have any templates, websites, suggestions etc regards the development of such a policy? Any pointers? Thanks!

hey, maybe this person could be helpful to consult for aspects of labour satisfaction in coops:

HSE always used to have materials on stress and mental health and presumably will have up to date stuff as stress is officially a workplace hazard. I recall adopting/borrowing.editing a policy from Social Firms Uk on stress when I was a member of CAN. @austencordascocan Do you still have that one?

i used HSE stress surveys for several years at suma. the results were surprisingly bad. i think the benchmarks used were biased against worker coops. im happy to talk about usinh them in context. if an employer has an Employee Advice Program in place and is using the HSE stress managment program they are immune from prosecution for work related stress.

HSE web site currently has a section on stress at work including the materials Bob @bobcan mentions.

Tangent from the subject thread, this is more of an HR query. Does anyone have any best practice tips to share which might help this situation: a small, collective workers coop has a member who is not pulling their weight due to mental health issues, and also refuses to accept responsibility, but claims victimisation. The coop a) wants to stop losing money & workers & protect all the other members' sanity b) wants to do the best thing for the person, c) doesn't want public accusations of racism and ablism.
Is anyone aware of helpful resources around this, particularly with reference to whether they can be accused of discrimination if they end up firing the member? It's not Footprint by the way.

Sounds horribly familiar Cath. I think some kind of structured approach to appraisal (including addressing support for members as well as accountability for performance) can prevent this kind of situation getting out of hand. Also training in communication skills & assertiveness & coping with conflict. I'm talking to @Britta & @Bob regards a session at the WCW on appraisals in worker co-ops, hoping to share experiences and come out with at least some principles (i.e. identical procedures obvs won't work in different types of co-ops). Maybe this could be one of the starter questions. Will you be there? Hope so!

i'll be there and i'll encourage others to come too, thanks Kate :-)
