Eye and Vision - another free open access journal

LD Lee de-Wit Public Seen by 201

When I contacted Ubiquity Press, they highlighted that there was already an open access journal whose Author Publication Charges were already met by a society (aka free for authors). Now in its second year.

It is called Eye and Vision, and funded by an the Affiliated Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Take a look and see what you think: http://www.eandv.org/

Eye and Vision looks like it might be a good journal. But from both the topics of the published articles and their self-description, looks like it is a biology, ophthalmology, and clinical journal. Which is a significantly different space from psychophysics, would people here agree? We've certainly seen that with the ARVO journals, for which JoV is mostly psychophysics and cortical mechanisms and the other stuff usually appears in IOVS and TVST.

But Eye and Vision's publisher BMC, is a very big open access publisher that is worth having a look at, probably with more experience in the science space than Ubiquity, although I suspect higher-priced.

It would also be interesting and possibly useful to find out why Wenzhou Medical Uni Eye Hospital is funding this - what do they perceive to be the benefits? Especially if we need to motivate other organisations to fork out money.
