Embargo

VV

A paper of mine was just accepted for a journal that has a 12-month post-print embargo. Would it be a useful feature if one could upload a manuscript that is published automatically when the embargo period is over?

When I previously uploaded manuscripts, I did not notice such an option, so I presume it does not exist yet, but maybe I was also not paying attention.

I think this is a great idea! I work for a publisher and we often encounter issues with non-compliance of our embargoes (ie papers are posted too early), but equally, I am sure once a year has passed many forget to upload papers. If there were a way to upload it when you are thinking about it and put a hold on the publication date, I am sure we would see a lot more papers being self-archived.

Is it likely that this will be a common enough occurrence to warrant including it as a feature? I imagine it would be much easier to rely on the authors to upload their post-embargo article, rather than programmatically including an optional embargo in the EarthArXiv platform.

Sounds like this feature is indeed not yet available. At least Wiley has this policy for all post-prints, so it would affect a decent percentage of all papers. For these papers I would expect a large uptick in self-archiving. When your paper is published you promote it, a year later you are working on other topics.

I would suggest to wait a few more days for technical comments and to put up a poll at the end of the week to get an impression whether our community thinks such a feature would be helpful.

It is also worth noting that some publishers (and with some I mean specifically Elsevier) clarify embargo periods, which vary by journal, by uploading an obscure pdf list every year. In institutional repositories, librarians are tasked to catch up on this.

Some publishers have embargo periods for post-prints (e.g. Wiley). It is easy to forget to upload the post-print after the embargo. Shall we ask OSF to implement the option of posting a document after a certain period, for example when the embargo period of a post-print has expired?

Indeed I have a paper in Elseviers Results in Physics. I forgot to upload it to certain discussion fora.

Hmmm….good suggestion, although I am not sure where this might sit on OSF’s development schedule.

Matt: might you remind us of the best way to raise queries like this?

Thanks,

Chris

An embargo for preprint submissions has been requested, but has not been prioritized yet. In general though, you can check the public roadmap items in the attached Google Sheet, which is linked on the main OSF preprints page at osf.io/preprints. You can then email any requests to support@osf.io which gets triaged every week to be added into the development queue. We try to work on a quarterly basis, where new items are added to the following quarter's list, unless we can add it something that is already slated for development sooner.

That link seems to go elsewhere. Is this the document with the requests?

So if the vote stays like this we could join PsyArXiv, MarXiv in supporting a post-later feature for embargoed manuscripts and hope this option gets listed higher?

I very much like this idea! Would remove one step for newcomers to the preprint arena!

....although I should say that any results of a public vote undertaken here on Loomio will not be taken forward directly to COS, but instead to the Advisory Board for further consideration. This is the same as discussed earlier this year for moderation, commenting, etc.

VV

Victor Venema Wed 21 Feb 2018

Reminder that the poll is closing in one day. The poll on whether the EarthArXiv base would like to be able to upload a manuscript that is published automatically when the embargo period is over.

VV

Victor Venema Thu 22 Feb 2018

The poll is closed. We did not have much participation, but those that did vote overwhelmingly supported it: 11 agree, 1 abstains.

Chris, could you communicate this suggestion to the Advisory Board?

CJ

Christopher Jackson Thu 22 Feb 2018

Thanks Victor,

All: I think this is sensible and pretty straightforward. Are we in agreement that we can take this forward as a proposal to COS? If I don’t hear any dissenting voices in the next day or so, I’ll
contact them.

Thanks,

Chris
