Confirmation message at submission

VV Victor Venema Public Seen by 368

When I submitted my manuscript to EarthArXiv I got an email with the sentence below. It was clear to me what moderation means because I am blogger and maybe also to native speakers, but a colleague of mine was confused. Shall we try to formulate a less geeky version?

> "EarthArXiv has chosen to moderate their submissions using a post-moderation workflow, which means your submission is public and discoverable, while still pending acceptance by a moderator. You will receive a separate notification informing you of any status changes."

How about:

> "Your submission is provisionally accepted and will be immediately visible to the public and discoverable. A moderator of EarthArXiv will assess your submission and you will receive a separate notification informing you of any status changes."

Can we make the "status changes" more explicit. Are the only options "formal acceptance" and "reject"?

I am in favor of your "how about" text... much more clear.

Idem. Following @victorvenema and @hangeurdes, I'm in favor of changing the text. I added a 'of its definitive status' at the end :
"Your submission is provisionally accepted and will be immediately visible to the public and discoverable. A moderator of EarthArXiv will assess your submission and you will receive a separate notification informing you of its definitive status."

I also found the initial message a bit confusing. The proposed message would be less confusing. There is a pretty good explanation of what post-moderation means in amongst the OSF FAQ's, maybe the email sent to people should link to it? http://help.osf.io/m/preprints/l/806116-submitting-to-a-moderated-preprint-service#submitting-to-a-preprint-services-that-uses-post-moderation

An update of the text after the helpful responses:

Your submission is provisionally accepted and will be immediately visible to the public and discoverable. A moderator of EarthArXiv will assess your submission and you will receive a separate notification informing you of its definitive status.

The OSF calls the procedure EarthArXiv uses "post-moderation":

This is a very fair point Victor. The language is a bit convoluted and could easily be simplified, in line with what you suggest below. Might you take this up with OSF directly, either via Loomio
or the helpdesk?

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks for the feedback. I can pass the request on to the Preprint product team here at COS. We use a common template for all services using moderation, so we need to make sure this doesn't cause any issues for other services. We can assess and make some improvements.

Matt, great, thank you. Except for the OSF Blog and Computer Science archives, all may like a less geeky formulation. ;o)
