Does it make sense?

Great collection of ideas and systems. Here are my first impressions:

  1. I am a big fan of the Lean / Agile / Scrum as promoted and practiced by Team Wikispeed. This defines strict rules for iterating product development and three clear roles: PRODUCT OWNER, SCRUM MASTER and DEVELOPMENT TEAM MEMBER. How would those roles and relationships fit into your schema?

  2. Also a big fan of the Holographic Organization model and its EIGHT CORE FUNCTIONS, which I would map to value adding activities. All contributions of time (labor) would be categorized into one of these functions: CREATION, PROJECTION, CONNECTION, PROMOTION, DIRECTION, CONDUCTION, PRODUCTION, COMPLETION. This architecture will allow anyone to see balance / imbalance among the eight core functions, which are required for success and expansion in any organization. More at:

Our schema is flexible about relationships between people and organizations, and also about value-adding activities.

I'm not clear whether those core functions are types of work or process stages that could go into a recipe, but either way, they would fit fine.

In other words, I'm pretty sure you could set up what you described. And we are still in the stage of working with each of the networks that use the software, so if you have a network that wants to do so, we would develop with you to tailor the software as needed.

@timothyhitchcock - would you mind telling us a bit about yourself in the Introductions discussion?

You said Michel pointed you here, so I am curious about why. Etc. Totally optional, of course.

P.S. @timothyhitchcock - have you worked at WikiSpeed, or seen them in action? We have some questions about how they do things.

Hi Bob and everyone. I have been playing with open source electric cars for about five years. Had a chat with Michel a few days ago about various OS hardware efforts and the challenge of finding viable business models for tech startups. I got excited about mutual coordination of P2P production networks and would like to learn and contribute.

Yes, I spent a couple of weeks at the Lynwood shop with Joe Justice in April. Just got back from two months in Finland with the eCars Now! team and reconnecting with Wikispeed. I will be joining their weekly team meetings, which happen on Thursdays at 18:00 Pacific time (now daylight time until October).

I have a seat reserved for their Extreme Manufacturing course on August 21-22, which will include Scrum Master certification.

About me: retired veteran on a pension, living in Olympia Washington USA, an old hippie and geek-at-large. Volunteering my time to see things move forward toward success for all humanity and a thriving ecosystem. Strong resonance for system architecture and conceptual design, functional sculpture / industrial design. Basically a generalist and Bucky Fuller disciple.

How does Wikispeed pay the people who work on the cars?

I mean:

  1. Do they pay them? and if they do,
  2. How do they keep track of who to pay how much for what?

P.S. @lynnfoster is a certified Scrum Master.

Wikispeed is staffed by volunteers with intrinsic motivation. As far as I know, nobody is getting paid. Any surplus from operations is plowed back into development. I will confirm this with Joe next time we talk.

Thanks. A separate conversation about electric vehicles would also be interesting some time.
