Updated install instructions for production Loomio installation?

P Pål Public Seen by 47

Hello everyone.

I am happy to have discovered Loomio, and would like to run a local production installation of the software. However I find the current install guide very confusing, and reading some threads in this group indicates that many things have changed since the current install guide was written.

Is there some plans to update the install guide, and make it complete so it's possible to not have to be a linux master in order to install it? I can move around in the command line interface and install stuff on instructions, but I need ALL instructions, not just some of it (where it is assumed I know the rest of it that is not mentioned). Looks like your install guide is mostly aimed at linux professionals and not newbies)

Or...would it be possible to get someone to help me install and configure Loomio on my server, or guide me through it, possibly for some payment if it is not too heavy price? I can set up a basic Ubuntu 14.04 server with LAMP and Iredmail (SMTP) server, but I have problems with Git, Dokku and all the environment variables listed in the current install guide.

Thanks for the interest, @graabein. Yes, the existing docs on this particular area of the software aren't fantastic, and yes, it's on our immediate roadmap to upgrade them; as mentioned in some other threads around here, it's a major focus of ours this year to get Loomio to the point where developing and running an independent install is as easy and well-documented as can be.

I reckon @robertguthrie would be the right person to ask specific install questions, and hopefully we can make this much more seamless in the near future.

Thanks for answering, @jameskiesel

@robertguthrie could you help? :-)

@graabein I recently set up my own server using a custom Rails deployment, see this thread. I'll submit some updates to Loomio's tech manual soon, once I've got around to setting up the secondary services for realtime updates and reply-by-mail.

Also keep an eye on the Sandstorm port.

@toupeira thank you. I had a look at your thread, and also the Sandstorm port-thread. Still to complicated for me to figure out, so I will wait for your updates to the Loomio's tech manual. My linux experience and skills are limited to basics, basic command line, LAMP, basic mailserver, basic server security (fail2ban etc), install some php scripts (joomla/wordpress), Virtualmin/Webmin, modify some .ini files, just managed to install composer and drush for a Drupal project, etc. So when install procedures get more complicated than this, then I get into trouble, unless instructions are complete. I wait and see your tech manual updates, and then post spesific questons here if I get trouble.

I would real like to find a loomio expert to help installing a production instance. Anyone who has cracked this on a VPS?

Sorry for the radio silence on this issue. I was not sure what kind of timeframe to expect this work to be updated. However I'm pleased to say that I'm working on it now.

Currently documenting how to deploy Loomio with a docker image that I'm building.

This will replace the dokku based approach. I'll be deploying and updated tech manual at the end of this, which I'm pretty excited about.

Thanks for your patience, I expect to have something up early next week.

Any chance we could get one or two or more of the loomio devs to the Yunity Wuppdays in Rotterdam? (and is there a better place for this post? probably, but where?)

https://project.yunity.org/blog/post/join-us-wuppdays-rotterdam

I'm going to help them build a convergent architecture and we're already pulling Noomap and Yunity together in the same room. Would love to bring some of you into the early discussions so we'll share context. And it will be great fun...

Personally, I am assembling a crack team of hackers and people who love to work on huge problems to build a new internet architecture from the ground up with zero legacy support assumptions. We can wrap TCP sockets into it somewhere for supporting certain things but we're going to rethink and redesign and build working prototypes of the new global architecture which has the following characteristics:

1) Massively parallel at level never seen before 100x or better than current best-case Von Neumann
2) Parallel list and data structure lockless and contention less inserts
3) Data structures are the byte equivalent
4) Bit-serial and variable bit for massive pipelining possibilities and hardware addressable data structures

I've been working on the OpenCog project for Ben Goertzel and Linas Vepstas on the internals of their AtomSpace hyper table and am helping fix the tools and persistence management etc.

I'm bringing a team of some of the best young people and old hands in tech to Rotterdam to start the work. I leave today and will be there for 42 days, there Berlin, London, and perhaps a few other places. I'm bringing in 5 young guys from my team of friends in Lagos.

Some of the programmers are compatible personalities but not as advanced in their sharing / new economy thinking yet, love to get some cross-pollination going with Loomio's insights.

Thanks @curtisfaith. That looks really interesting, thanks for the invitation.
Should you need, feel free to contact me directly via [email protected].

I'll discuss this with the team!

Hi! I'm also trying to install Loomio with Docker, first just locally. How can I do that without DNS and a public IP?

I've entered "localhost" but it seems not operational on either port 80 or 8000.

@gasparincze I don't actually know.

The loomio-deploy repo is focused on a public loomio installation.

If you want to run loomio locally, then I think should should look at Setting up loomio development

Please let me know if there is anything that I need to update in that document.
