Policy 1: Adoption of sociocracy

The Permaculture Co-Lab uses sociocratic principles to structure its organisation and decision making processes.

Training and resources will be provided to ensure participants are able to learn about and use sociocracy effectively.

Date agreed: 24th July 2017

Review date: Review progress of training resources at 6 months and wider adoption of sociocracy at 12 months.

Andy Goldring and Erin Young reviewed this policy proposal and we think this one is ready now for your comment. We would like to be ready to seek agreement next week (10 July), so please comment this week (3rd July) if you can.

Nice. Simple, clean. I love it.
Perhaps we could put in a reference to a seminal text on Sociocracy as an anchoring point about what sociocratic principles entail? This would make it more specific and less open to interpretation. Also, do we already have definition of "participants"?

Perhaps a definition might read: 'participants in decision making' to link it to the Loomio decision amking process.

Links to sociocracy will come once the training resources have been created...

All good except 6 months before review is barely enough time to get any practice in - just refecting on our previous 3 years of process and noticing that it takes quite a while (2 years perhaps) for a group culture to develop adequately for there to be enough perspective to make thoughtful reviews about such matters ... altogether I think we need to maintain a steady, no rush pace ... suggest 1 year minimum assuming that we have some people from existing CoLab nursing new Stewards arriving ...

Must agree with Andrew that six months is too limited a time before review. People will have to learn an get used to the process in that time, and the process itself needs time for debugging. I think Andrew's proposal for a one year period before review is realistic.

Review date clarification. Our thinking was specifically that we need to review progress on the development of training materials. Perhaps revised policy review date would read "review progress of training resources at 6 months and wider adoption of sociocracy at 12 months"

Have not seen any discussion about training material production so can't comment on that and, I don't think the policy doc is right place to add in details of operational/task pathways like this? Not sure where those do go in our system - on a Trello Board?

This looks great, thank you!
I think 9-12 months for review date; Agree with 12 months as others suggest.

Agree that no need to mention training materials deadlines here.

Hi everyone - great to see these comments coming in. The reason we have included "Training and resources will be provided to ensure participants are able to learn about and use sociocracy effectively." is because we think it is important to state that we will be pro-actively supporting the adoption of sociocracy in a systematic way. Secondly we want to specifically review whether those training materials and resources have been developed and used. A later revision of the policy might not include a statement about training, but for now it is important for Erin and me that we state this.
