Qn: 'I was just double checking is that $40k in total for applicants from across the whole of NZ?"

Qn: 'What is a 'credible outdoor activity provider?'
Answer: Elements of credibility for something like bush walking include: experience of delivering similar activities, experience with and understanding of outdoor risk management systems (see http://www.supportadventure.co.nz/safety-management-systems for examples), staff qualification and training e.g. NZOIA or Skills Active quals (or equivalent) related to the outdoors, logged instructing time in the outdoors, whether or not your organisation has a safety management plan for outdoor activities that has been externally reviewed.
If this presents a barrier I am more than happy to use NZRA networks to direct you to a list of local operators who have expertise with this type of thing and could partner with you and the association on this. One of the purposes of this fund is to get the outdoor sector working more effectively with a more diverse range of NZ communities. We can’t change the safety law but we can try and smooth the process to make them less of a barrier

Hi. I am wanting to know if the target group will be different for each round? Eg we work with people with disabilities which I believe fits the blurb but not the specific target groups? Thanks

RM

Rob MacLean Thu 15 Feb 2018 11:59PM

Hi Karla, applications will be assessed on whether they reach the specific target groups ie.

* Young girls 10-18
• Young people 5-18 in lower socio-economic urban areas (including Maori)
• Asian ethnicity
• Pasifika ethnicity
Programmes targeting disabled persons within these groups would meet the requirement.

Thank you. And these target groups will be the same for each round?

RM

Yes, the groups will remain the same for each round.

QN received by email:
We are a tertiary institution and currently do not run any ‘outdoor’ based courses. I am the student support advisor for the youth guarantee programmes for second chance learners who generally have colourful life stories and high needs.

I am wondering if applying for the funding would be applicable in the sense that we could use it to access/fund taking the youth to do outdoor activities with outdoor operators (for example adventure ropes courses)?
Or possibly utilise some skilled professionals to work with us.

Or is it not really worth applying as we are not an accredited outdoor facility?
I am not qualified to run any outdoor courses alone as I only have a certificate in outdoor leadership – so I would really need to call on professionals and outsource.
We are hoping to run some workshops with a ‘nature/adventure therapy’ type focus inclusive of the indigenous values and kaupapa in our organisation, so including some more outdoor activities in addition would be great to compliment them.
Answer:
The fund is to help underrepresented populations in outdoor rec get access to quality experiences and/or training in outdoor rec, there is no reason why you couldn’t apply but from your description of your background you would have to do so through in partnership an experienced outdoor provider who can provide skilled professionals. In some cases providers apply on behalf of a client organisation, in some client organisations apply. These providers will need to meet the safety preconditions as laid out in the Request for Proposals.
