SubGroups Pruning: Deleting Subgroups and Bulk Move of Discussions

DS Danyl Strype Public Seen by 70

As a group coordinator, it would be great to be able to:

  • move a discussion quickly, by clicking on a 'move' icon (with a 'move' tooltip) next to the discussion title in a group or subgroup discussion list.

  • tick a tick box next to the titles of a number of discussions in a group or subgroup discussion list, then click one button to move them all.

  • select multiple discussions in a group or subgroup and move them to a new subgroup or group

  • select two subgroups and merge them together under one name, with all the discussions from both groups merged into the new group

Hi Strypey, sorry about the delay! There is currently no functionality for bulk moving discussions or merging subgroups. I'm afraid manually moving the discussions is the only way for the time being. Re. your second enquiry, when you delete a group the discussions are also deleted.

I will edit the context box to make some feature suggestions that would solve my problem statement, which @hannahsalmon responded to above. Which was:

I’m a ‘coordinator’ of an established Loomio group whose users have agreed to a restructure of our subgroups. I need to delete one group, and move all of its discussions to an archives subgroup called Records. Going through and moving discussions one-by-one is a painfully slow multi-click-and-wait process. Is there any way to bulk move groups of discussions, or merge whole subgroups?

Also, what happens if I just delete a subgroup? Where do all the discussions in it go? I’m thinking some of these issues may end up going to the Features subgroup, but I thought I’d seek help here first, and see if anyone knows about any functions I don’t :)

Just wondering if there has been any further discussion on the topic of subgroup pruning/ bulk moving of threads somewhere else that could be linked here?

One change that would help, and ought to be fairly simple to implement, would be some code that kicks in when a users starts to delete a subgroup. It would say:

"Warning: when a subgroup is deleted, all the discussion threads in that subgroup are deleted

Then it would ask:

"would you like to keep all the public threads in this subgroup? Warning: if you want to keep any private threads you need to change them to public"

  • if the user selects "no", all threads in the subgroup are deleted
  • if the user selects "yes", it would then ask:

"which group do you want to move them to?"

The user would then be able to choose from a list, including the main group (the one that isn't a subgroup) and all existing subgroups. All public threads in the subgroup are then moved to the group specified by the user, and all private threads are deleted.

We've definitely felt this pain as well. Recently went through a process of manually reorganising subgroups, moving a bunch of discussions, archiving and merging subgroups, etc.
