Presenting a viable proposal to Twitter @ Twitter HQ

DS Danny Spitzberg Public Seen by 457

Hi everyone!

Tonight in SF, a group of people who have been super-keen on #platformcoop from a labor justice perspective came up with a way to get real, by hosting an event – at Twitter HQ itself – to float the #BuyTwitter proposal.

Show some love to the organizers at https://twitter.com/daspitzberg/status/786775013642731522 : )

What do people think about
a) putting effort into actually interfacing with Twitter, and,
b) Starting with Monday's push, channeling interest in #BuyTwitter towards a real-life event?

Great idea, but NOT YET. Let's see how the Manifesto goes next week.

We may want to meet with Twitter at the top first before meeting with employees.

I'm up for live events. Is anyone else in the group from Washington, D.C.?

Thanks, @tommcdonough! We'll keep on laying the groundwork for engagement,

To support that effort, can you tell me what strategy to you see for escalation? What results are you expecting from the manifesto, and when? Is it more of an art piece like http://wagesforfacebook.com/ or more of a challenge/petition?

@dannyspitzberg I'd like to get your comments on our plan at Slack Buy Twitter channel #financing_strategies

@dannyspitzberg since this is a clear idea (work toward an in-person event) perhaps a proposal is in order? What I'm hearing is yes, but a bit later. So that's fine... we can still decide to start working on it now.

@alanna I absolutely agree.

First, here's a simple report back from last Thursday: a group of 6 humans and 1 puppy who attended co-op barn-raisers (like hackathons where people reunite to play forward what they learn each time) got together for an informal organizing meeting. See the lovely photo and the Tweet gathering attention at https://twitter.com/daspitzberg/status/786775013642731522 : )

We talked about the importance and urgency we each personally see at the intersection of fair platforms and relevant co-ops. Then we talked about doing another event. For some 30 minutes we traded ideas about events focused on 1. Workplace democracy means co-ops, 2. Service/food/cleaning companies and co-ops getting help, 3. Campaigning with a pledge of some kind, 4. Finance and investment for a co-op ecosystem. And then @paigepanter brought up 5. Buy Twitter.

After some excited discussion, we all agreed that hosting an event made a lot of sense – and service each and every one of the 4 points we touched on.

Last Friday, I circulated a short write-up of an event proposal (in this Google Doc https://docs.google.com/document/d/103KO5GuBOzSlZLR4wQiQhxk-pBpWn21xIYdGdwHybQ8/edit). And in a moment, I post it as a proposal to Loomio : )

Host a panel discussion with Twitter stakeholders and decision-makers @ Twitter HQ Closed Fri 21 Oct 2016 11:02PM

In support of general agitation and education with the manifesto and other means of making #BuyTwitter a reality, a growing group of Bay Area-based organizers are actively exploring an in-person event.

Our intention is to build (and leverage) relationships with key stakeholders.

Date: within the next 3 weeks (before ≈Nov 15)

Location: likely at Twitter HQ (if contacts we have can pull through); otherwise, nearby

Possible people on stage:
We want the discussion to be 2 parts excitement, 3 parts explanation. This discussion should really go somewhere! Below is a list of likely invitees
- an expert in finance and law who know what's possible (investment lawyer Jenny Kassan jennykassan.com, co-founder of theselc.org and/or startup lawyer Kyle Westaway westaway.co, counsel for new co-op nobl.io)
- a co-op enthusiast from from a large co-op that might be analogous (someone from Stocksy United, or REI, or perhaps even chsinc.com - which also runs the CHS Foundation?)
- a leading activist in labor rights, digital rights,
- a Twitter executive, employees, or board members..?
- moderated by a local journalist or writer

Possible improvement:
Panel discussions are the least interactive, but a good MVP. Below are a few simple ways to build on the basic event.
- livestream it
- facilitate break-out groups
- host an unconference-style activity before or after

If this idea can be broadcasted to Twitter folks, that could be an amazing help! Even if the first event is sort of provisional, it'd be worth it if the presentation is well done.
