Welcome to the Global Assembly Coordinating Group space. This is the group that will take us across the finish line on June 16. In this loomio sub-group we will discuss all aspects of the organizing for June 16, take up key questions and vote on them, and sort out the final details for June 16 logistics. New conversation threads will be added as needed. At present we have established only two sub-groups: this one and a sub-group for "open discussion of knowledge democracy." At present we are taking our first vote on a proposal. It is a simple matter to help us get started. Once the vote is completed we will take an action and move forward another step.

Just for a quick review:
* . The Global Assembly has three components
* . The first component is the participatory workshops now taking place around the world. The first workshop was organized by Jack Whitehead, Marie Huxtable, Jackie DeLong and others and took place in February. Lesley Wood and Mary McAteer are coordinating this component.
* . The second component is the June 12 Pre Conference. The pre-conference will consist of nine workshops taking place at the University of Cartagena. I have attached a file with the workshop descriptions.
* The third component is the actual Global Assembly event, which will take place on June 16. We are still working on the venue for the Assembly.

Warm Regards,

Lonnie

Lonnie you indicated that "One or two more workshops may
be added in the coming weeks:" therefore, are still accepting proposal for participatory workshops?

Hi Emmanuel. We are still accepting proposals for the participatory workshops. We have added a few in the past few weeks. These are the regional/local gatherings being held between now and the end of May. If you are interested in convening a workshop, please contact Lesley Wood or Mary McAteer ASAP. Regards.

Hi Lonnie below is what I'm proposing and will thus appreciate your thought on this:

Using Action Learning Circles’ Framework in Conceptualizing Measurable Actions to Induce Democratic Association in Higher Education:

This half-day workshop is intended to introduce participants to the theoretical and pragmatic framework of action learning circles (ALC) in conceptualizing measurable actions to facilitate democratic associations across higher education institutions and educational policy research actions. The ALC will thus provide a participant-centered learning framework for conference attendees to brainstorm problem-solving strategies on ways that democratic associations can be promoted across the boundary of higher education institutions. Depending on the number of participants at this workshop session, team-focused roles will be alternated to facilitate the ALC framework.

As a starting point, participatory action research (PAR) projects or initiatives across institutions of higher education will be critically examined to evaluate their democratic association contributions using the abstracts of professional doctorate research projects published in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global. The contributions will thus be evaluated regarding ways that the ecology of knowledge production demonstrates the propensity for the facilitation of democratic associations in the quest for building knowledge democracies across the boundary of higher education institutions.

Useful excerpts from the exploratory research project, a published work of Tetteh (2004) on Theories of Democratic Governance in the Institutions of Higher Education1 will be distributed and used as a lens to aid in examining the published PAR projects of professional doctorate research contributions in the construction of knowledge democracies. Such germane excerpts will include figures and table illustrations on hierarchical government and democratic governance structures in higher education administration, conditions conducive to democratic associations, and summary appraisal of democratic governance theories for building knowledge democracies across the boundary of higher education institutions.

For Tetteh, “Congruent with a democratic goal pursuit is the need to fill a civic vacuum, which means the democracy for social change must address where the gap exists in the democratic governance of civic society” (pp. 77 - 78). Therefore, by reflecting on ways to address the facilitation of democratic association contributions for building knowledge democracies, a modification of three epistemological inquiries raised in Tetteh’s work will be revisited: (a) Should the civic mission of higher education focus only on the training of the mind? (b) Should the security of democratic society be of any concern to higher education institutions? (c) In what ways can colleges and universities facilitate democratic association contributions for building knowledge democracies across the boundary of higher education institutions?

Finally, the experts from the exploratory research project of Tetteh’s work will also shed some light on ways to conceptualize the measurable action for the facilitation of democratic association contributions for building knowledge democracies across the boundary of higher education institutions.

Contacts: Emmanuel Tetteh (USA) would appreciate interested colleagues to join me in facilitating this workshop; otherwise, the ALC framework will allow attendees to help in the workshop facilitation.

Hi Emmanuel,

Please clarify. What are you proposing this for? We are long past proposal submission for the conference. Preconference workshops are set.

Lonnie, I truly understand if it’s too late for what I’m proposing; please no need to worry about that.
