2019/20 strategy

R RobJN Public Seen by 46

Hi all. had the following strategy for last year. If you can share ideas we can work these up into a 2019/20 strategy.

Last year's strategy:

  • Promote Quarterly Projects outside of OSM channels
  • Run a meetup event (aligned with an ODI node or similar existing group)
  • Focus on developers and website builders as the main groups. Additional focus groups to be aligned with Quarterly Projects.
  • Get the Talent Directory set up so that we are ready to link people to projects if requested
  • Improve the website, focusing on helping people navigate existing content, rather than new content creation
  • Develop a list of projects that are of academic interest

I think the one thing we're really lacking is enough volunteers to keep their local neighbourhoods up to date with new housing developments and changing shops etc. One way to address this is through more publicity about OSM, and reaching out to new groups of people. Two things that might be worth perusing here: I'd like to see OSM UK try to get more mainstream media coverage for OSM success stories (difficult finding good things I think -- "90% of Post Offices mapped" isn't really news!). Secondly I wonder if there would be opportunities to use the quarterly projects to partner with another organisation to leverage their membership/supperters. (e.g. mapping paths in conjunction with the Rambers Assocation, or public water fountains with https://refill.org.uk/ .)

Where should we focus our 2019/20 strategy? Closed Sun 4 Aug 2019 3:02PM

Outcome
by Jez Nicholson Thu 8 Aug 2019 4:03PM

The board discussed the results and decided to use those with 9 votes and above to set the direction fo 2019/20. The general theme of the ideas seems to be getting the things we created last year (Talent Directory, etc.) to join together better, e.g. get more interaction between organisations and the Talent Directory. We will use the list to guide discussions and actions during the year rather than deciding it all now.

Please use your 8 "dot votes" to indicate where you think our priority should lay for the year ahead. You can allocate your votes however you see fit (e.g. all on one or split over several options). I've tried to capture all the ideas a bullet points. The poll is set to allow you to add a new category if you want to.

Given the lack of volunteer time (outside of mapping) I've picked some low admin tasks. I've also pick stuff outside the norm as I think the UK community is good at supporting each other to deliver some of the list already.

Tough to focus, but this doesn’t exclude the other points.

As a Londoner the extensive availability of street imagery has spoilt me. Mapping a shopping street out of town was a shock of going back to the old way.

How many were you intending to use as your focus? I'm guessing the results will be discussed by directors and a strategy formed with input from the vote.

I find the results had to see because it doesn't order them, so these are the top ones (as far down as I can be bothered to copy)...
20 - Use the quarterly projects to partner with another organisation to leverage their membership/supporters.
16 - Pursue a role as a lobby group. That is, getting OSM on the radar of large organisations.
15 - Proactive outreach to businesses, organisations and academia to show them a front door to using and contributing to OSM.

10 - A micro-grant programme to support those who want to help us grow the community via talks, workshops, etc.
10 - Develop guidelines to work out when OSM UK should and should not support a mechanical edit / data import.
9 - Create a budget.
9 - Assist with conflating TfL Cycle Infrastructure Data into OSM.

Hi Gregory, you've more-or-less got it spot on. The board discussed the results and decided to use those with 9 votes and above to set the direction.
